I am looking at building a tube buffer using a 12bz7 to go b/t my PC and a pair of active speakers to give me a tube sound. I listen to music while working on the computer. Anyone have a schematic or an idea on this project... Good or Bad. Iam a new at this, and thick skinned. If its a dumb tube tell me & what may be better. Looking for something very simple and straight forward Thanks😀
Bad choice. 12BZ7s that I've measured have rather high distortion. Worse yet, they have a low transconductance so make poor cathode followers. You'd do much better with something like an ECC88.
You've got a lot of options, but a cathode follower would be simplest and best. You can get a lot of specific design ideas from a good book like Morgan Jones's "Valve Amplifiers."
Hi,
Wasn't that what he wanted?
If you keep on plugging that book nobody's going to dare asking questions any more....Bye, Tube forum.......
Unless they're about that book of course....................
Cheers, 😉

Frank: It's indeed a pretty useful text. And of course, so is Allan Wright's "Preamp Cookbook," but I have less experience with that. Trying to cover the ins and outs of CF design in a thread is, as you are painfully aware, painful.😉
I won't sic RDH on some poor unsuspecting guy!
ss: You might also check out some of fdegrove's preamp designs. A quick search of this forum will yield some gold nuggets, I'll bet.

I have found a couple, one that is something that may work for me. It uses a 12ax7 I have several plus a nice 5751 . will sit down and start reading the valve book which is what I should have done first. reading schematics is hard for me. If I see a picture or I am looking at the uint plus a schematic I have no problem but just the digram is hard. No training or education in this area. I can build a house from the plans just have to learn all the symbles for electronics. I am learning and working at it. It fun and I am retired so I have the time to work on it.
If you're just getting started, be VERY careful about the voltages involved- you want your retirement to be a long one. Read the thread on safety and high voltage.
Where in Wyo are you? I've got some strong Casper connections.

spent a couple of years in Casper worked a contract job up on the mountain, town nice place wife liked it in town. I am back in Evanston S/W corner of the state but live rual she liked being in town.
my repect for high voltage rates right with fire Panic. I use to work as a rigger for antinas work high .... very high regard for voltage its the one thing I do know about electricity and the first thing that I read when I came on to the site. Very good site great inf. its why I donated.
Evanston: long-time beer supplier to SLC. And I know personally; during my grad-school days, we'd make that run weekly.

Here's a good page:

Basically, you can pick what you want pick from simple to complex. The very first schematic could be super-cheap too: for low 100+ volts you can probably find a cheap substitute for a pricey new power transformer.
