Hi .

I"m interested in start a Tube amplifier proyect ..but I am Not a expert ...
after of read some post"s ..I believe that the amplifier that i whant is one "mono Block " model that use the 300b tubes .

I live in Chile south america and exist a lot of tube parts in the market .

Some body can help me with the material list that i need for start this proyect ???

Thanks for any information .

Luciano🙂

How many empenadas will you send me if I help you?😉

You will need to find :
1. 2 * Output transformers 3,5k primary for 300B
2. 1 * or 2 Power transformer 450V - 0 - 450V ...250mA
3. 2 * 300b tubes. I recommend you start with something like Svetalana. www.triodeelectronics.com is a great place to get them...(If you can't get them from a dealer in Chile)
4. Driver tubes...I suggest something like 6N1P also from triodeelectronics. (Or I can send them to you if you like..free ofcourse)
5. Lots of resistors..
6. A few good polyprop caps of around 33uF
7. Various switches, volume control (if it is integrated), speaker binding posts..etc, etc.

Most importantly you will need a schematic. Have you decided which 300B amp it going to be?

Regards,
Bas

Ps...maybe if you are a starter you should get a kit first...from www.welbornelabs.com or www.bottlehead.com or www.diyhifisupply.com

Just a warning...building a valve amp is MUY PELIGROSSO!!!!

Hallo Luciano,

I think that is a very good amp to build!!

You will get people that find it old fashioned and will suggest a 2 stage amp with a 6c45..but that is a very difficult tube to implement if you are a newbie...like you and me.

Luckily my wife (from Chile) makes me empenadas and there is lot's of Chilean wine here in the Netherlands...I was just joking 🙂

Cheers,
Bas

what do you think about this 300b amplifier ?? :

Thanks
Luciano

I have heard this amp and it sounds very good.Derek has one of the most detailed sites around.
I am currently in the process - with very helpful assistance from Derek- of building his MkIII version which he is also in the process of building. This will be with Plitron OTX again but specced with EML300b XLS with about 14-15W.
What speakers are you using?

300 b proyect

🙂

Thanks at all that make a reply to my proyect post ..

I start the mission of joint all the material list necesary for this proyect ...

When I have some news ...I post this ¡¡¡

PD. Sorry for my poor english ....

🙄

Thanks

Hi guys,

I'm also trying to build a 300B amp and need a nudge in the right direction. I have a set of Citation 2 OPT's. I dont want to build a SE amp but i'm considering a PSE or PP. First, would I be able to use these transformers for this application? Secondly, what are your thoughts on a PSE or PP in terms of sonics - any perferences? I want the extra dynamics and power since my speakers rate a 92db into 8 ohms. I'm also considering using OPT's such as the Sowter SE12 - any thoughts on their performance? My budget is somewhat tight in the sense that I cant afford Tangos or WE300B tubes.

Thanks - lucid

Citation II output trannies! Wow good score. Did you get a power transformer also?

You will not be able to use these for a SE design of any type (including PSE) as they don't have an air gap, and the core will saturate with a net DC current.

However, I bet you could make a very nice sounding PP amp, and have about 50W per channel! 🙂

I would suggest EL34 PP or KT88 PP. You could even build a citation II clone...

Or you could go for DHT PP, using something like sovtek 2A3s. DHTs produce mainly 2nd harmonics, which get cancelled nicely in a PP amp, giving you a very clean output... You might only get around 12W per channel tho, using fixed bias.

Hi Lucid,
I also have a set of Citation II transformers and have occasionally thought about what I should do with them. I've got too many things on my plate right now so it may be a while before I do anything along these lines, but I have thought about making a PP 300B amp. There's a nice article on the web that was originally published in VTV. Take a look at:

Derek's amps

Regarding Derek Walton and his magical amps, I have built 2 Mark 1's (Hammond iron) and they are magic (Sony SCD-1, Soliloquy 6.5s, Silver Circle Audio cables). I am just starting the second set.
Derek and I are beginning design of an amp using 6C33B or C tubes. Derek is incredibly helpful and a true boon to DIY audio. We have become extremely good friends over the last year. I speak with him about twice a week in his Leprechaun dwelling 10 miles north of Dublin. My amps are actually posted on his website. The next ones will be better.
We are also working on passive volume control/selector swtching devices.
If anyone needs help sourcing materials, whether caps, resistors, tubes (grerat supplies of 5692s and GZX37's), let me know.
Thanks,
Dave

Those individuals with H/K Citation II O/P "iron" in their "stashes" posess sonic Gold. Before making any decisions about implementation, please contact Jim McShane, Mr. H/K Cit 2. The URL for Jim's web site is: http://pages.prodigy.net/jimmcshane/ .

I own a Jim McShane refurbed Cit 2. The amp kicks some very serious butt. Properly overhauled or replicated, the Cit. 2 is very much a mailed fist in a thick velvet glove.

FWIW, I would give serious consideration to the construction of monoblocks, as the Cit. 2 stereoblock weighs more than 70 lbs. (32 KG.).
