TT Plinth Wood

I'm building a new plinth for my Thorens TD 124. I was thinking of making a design similar to this: http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/sp10huxkaneta1b.jpg but sandwiching the layers between two veneer like pieces (I was thinking about a darker wood, so that it fits the tone arm which is a Grado Micro Control wooden tone arm).

My question is what type of wood would be best construct the core of the plinth with. Any suggestions on wood types that dampen vibrations but don't kill the sound or gluing techniques??

If the reason for the sandwich is non purely cosmetic you can alternate plywood and black or grey 5mm plexiglas.
It will be a more cozy plinth and a more inert one with all the acoustic properties of a real sandwich.
After all slices of white bread (wood),and dark bread (wood also) ,ain't a sandwich.
