Trying to decipher boards, chips, ....

I'm looking, and looking, and starting to go nuts with all the boards and chip names (bunch of numbers!), designs, etc...

I tried to find a thread that would help to decipher which chips are good, which aren't, or designs for particular setups, but I couldn't.

Is there a list of specs and comments (like chip most appropriate for subs or mains, good or bad audio fidelity, etc...) regarding what's available now?

As always, i'm open to being corrected, but i'm reasonably sure it's a case of "it's how you use it" 😀

I mean, with proper design (both electrical and circuit-board), you should be able to get a half-decent amp out of a so-so chip/design, but it's really easy to make a mess of the circuitry around a well-regarded chip/design 🙂

Well, the plan being I would probably get a kit already built, and upgrade some stuff along the way. Lots of enclosed kits for sale around here. But they all have these cryptic names and so many variations!

TPA3116D2, TPA3123, TPA3118, TDA2030, TK2050, TDA7492, etc...

For example, a quick search on a local site (kinda like eBay) gives me about 350 products, from single chip at about $2, complete boards for about $20, and assembled within an enclosure for $30.

I liked this one as it was 50+50w plus 100w sub output... but of course, no specs.

i''m the sort that will harvest the chips outta car audio and book shelf (you know those all in one jobbies cd/tuner/cassette(?))systems to make a chip amp cannibalizing the worthwhile components and adding in the bits i need. why pay shipping when you could refine your desoldering technique?
even old large projection tv's and standard crt sets sometimes contain worthwhile chipamps.
