Hi all,
I find some transformer manufacturers claim that their transformer (power trans, output trans and choke) are using Z11 or Z14 silicon steel.
What is Z11 or Z14 mean? (I know it is according to some standards, but any more details?)
Z11 or Z14 is better?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Z11 mean old specification from nippon steel material
equivalent to 35Z155 present specification
thickness 0.35 coreloss 1.47 w/kg at 1.7Tesla 50 Hertz
equivalent to M6 AISI

Hello
Z11 is the lowest grade in group grain oriented core that is high efficiency material mostly used to make big transformer like distribution transformer and power transformer.
Z14 didn't have in system.
May be you mis remember. Because ther are another one group of silicon steel call non oriented silicon steel. that one mostly use in small transformer, motor core, stepping motor, balast core and also Choke, and etc.
one of this they have H14 or 50H400 in present .
This one coreloss=4.0 w/kg at 1.5 tesla 50 Hz
Of course Z11 is better than H14

Lamination Materials
We have tried to assemble in one place both an overview of all the commonly used lamination materials, as well as some data which may be useful to designers of electromagnetic equipment.
Select an article from the list below...
Cold Rolled Motor Lam | Silicon Steel | Nickel Alloys | Cobalt Alloy
for our double c-core lamination.

hi joans,
the silver colour lamination because of contain Nickel.
Nickel alloy will more shininy with more nickel contain.
the black colour orient HI-B because of the different grade, physical property as cool roll & heated roll. Different flux density will have different.
But in my knowledge thinner lamination will be better because of less core lose.
for more information pls visit my site to proto lam.

Click more info & see the bottom.
U can see the detail of different lamination.

siu sin man tho,
hi,
thanks a lot for your response, i am not sure i got you, but will get in touch with you thru my friend who's working in hongkong....
can you help me locate vendors in hongkong or china for raw torroid core steel materials? i would like to make my own torroid transformers, fyi, i make all the EI transformers tha i use in my amps....
thank you very much!
