Hello, I have been thinking about buying a projector for my new house but saw on ebay about turning your TV into a projector using a Fensal Lense... I have read some of the post on here but like the topic subject I am a total novice... whats the easiest way to do this ?
Is there a step by step guide i can use or should i buy one from ebay ?
Thanks
Mark

it is a good way to learn about diy projectors but the image is dim and the words are reversed. read the forums, check out the finished projects and how they got there. see how much you want to spend, check your skill level. building a diy projector requires working with a/c voltage so be careful. if you dont know, ask!

I originally got involved in DIY Projectors the same way. I saw the plans on eBay, was intrigued, searched on the internet and found some guys website with basic instructions on it.

I was planning to actually write a guide on how to build a "real" DIY projector so I made a large JPG with plans for the Fresnel Lens projector experiment that I was going to give to people for free. It's really more of a science experiment in the theory of projection rather than a "61" INCH TV IN YOUR HOME !!!".

I just came across the image the other day when I was sorting my hard drive. I will check for it when I get home from work today and if I find it, I will post it to the forums for you so you can save your money for real projector parts instead of plans that should be free.

As others mentioned it's basically a fun project to get your feet wet. It does work but the results leave MUCH to be desired. A lot of the guys that sell those plans on eBay stole pictures taken from our "actual" home built projectors and posted them in their auctions claiming those were the results.

A good comparison of what it will look like are pictures I took from my DIY projector in a fully lit room. The quality of my projection with an LCD panel / MH bulb projector in a fully lit room is about as good as you'll get from a Fresnel Lens projector in a completely dark room. You also will probably not get as good a clarity, and your picture will be upside down and backwards.

Example:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hope that answers your questions. Check back later today for the plans.

Here, are the plans as an attachment. Hopefully this works. Best viewed in Internet Explorer or any other program that does not automatically resize images to fit the screen.

[EDIT: 100K attachments or less?? Guess that's outta the question. 🙁 Might as well remove that feature from the forum as it's pretty useless. Sorry I tried...]

Having built many DIY LCD projectors, and still building I asked a few of the sellers on Ebay where in the picture is the projector that is making the image they advertise? no answer. you can even just see the CRT ceiling mounted projector in one of the ads.
I started out with the lcd and optics route but, I mean they do work but not that well, I have had an old fresnel from way back when in boy scout camp when we used it to start fires with, I tried it in front of a 13" tv, the pic was upside down and backward and very dim. not really watchable except in total darkness, my LCD projector works in half daylight conditions which would wash out the other simple projectors image, of course we all graduate to the LCD and real optics of a DIY projector eventually.
