Toroidal transformer Q

Hi guys, I had a Kingsley Jouster which used a toroid wired backwards to step up the voltage from a 12 VAC to something like 280V to power 2 x 12AX7 tubes. I want to do something similar. Any idea on exactly what would be required for this? Can a toroid use both AC and DC? I'm sure it's a question of rectified placement... Anyway just opening up the discussion -thanks ahead of time!

What you are trying to do usualy takes 2 transformers ..... Ive done it using 2 12v ac transformers , one transformer connected normally and the second connected backwards which will give you 120v ac output which rectifies to about 160v DC ....
