I have numerous TO-36 cased transistors.
2N441 DELCO
SP672 MOTOROLA
2N173 MOTOROLA
and
2N1521 G.E.
I need help finding uses for these and specs for the SP672's I have about a dozen of each. Any good ideas? ANy help is greatly appriciated
THanks

Yes they are germanium, TO-36 Case, very large, thats for sure. The info is great, Wish i knew what the SP ones are too. Excuse my ignorance, i'm used to Holow state stuff, what is the deal with germanium?
the 2N1521's look hig? What gives. I'm a newbie to solid state homebrew.
Thanks
Jeremy

Thanks

These transistors would have been used in things like power regulators. They are considerably too slow for audio use. Note some of them being in the 10KHz transition frequency region. We like to have them up into the megahertz for audio outputs of any quality.
Consider using them in linear series pass regulators or low frequency switching applications.
...I suppose a subwoofer amplifier is possible.

But aren't most germaniums s/b limited over darn near all their operating regions? That would make them poor choices for a sub amp - even off a 40 volt supply.
I'm not saying they wouldn't suck... hehe. Just that you're more likely to get something in the LF range than fullrange.
Any one have a schematic for a voltage regulator to use these? Most of the PS's use NPN's as pass transistors. Any ideas?

try in old periodics ...........
in your boots , I would still try with some simpler amp............. maybe you'd be surprised ........ who knows......

Some of the old app notes for 3-terminal regulators wrapped a PNP transistor around the regulator. Emitter would conect to suppy rail, base would connect to the VR input terminal. Collector and VR output connect togther. The base-emitter resistor would set the overall current limit for the pair (max. vbe would be set by the regulator's internal limit). It was rather bulletproof with decent PNP Si transistors. If the in/out differential is low enough the Ge devices will work.
