I believe that THX says the short term (i.e. with 'headroom') SPL at their reference volume is 105dB for the normal range (and 115dB for the LFE at <80hz), playing pink noise. Does anyone know if these reference levels are 'total' SPL from all speakers, or are they expected from each speaker individually?

As far as I know each speaker should be able to produce 105 dB peaks at the listening position individually. Not something that's hard to obtain IMO. In a room early reflections and reverberant field will also contribute to loudness.
