1978 - before CAD and personal computers. Scientific calculators were new, replacing slide rules. Cell phones? Forget about it. Perhaps in the imagination of kids reading Dick Tracy comics (Dick Tracy had a wrist watch two way radio). Those were the days. 🤓

It is a preamplifier.
We could easily build an amplifier using the schematic.
I would not use the servo, though.
