Threshold model # prefix and suffix definitions?

As I look at the many model # of older Threshold equipment I notice many of the products have the same model # with a change to the prefix of suffix:

S/1000 vs S/1000 series II
SA4 vs SA4e
"SA" series vs "S" series
etc.

Do these represent any characteristics of the amp? Stasis, Cascode, Optical Bias, Class A, Class A/B?

Or are they just model #'s?
