I am ashamed to say I don't know the proper way to lace up a NAB tape spool. My current technique is to hold the tape onto the spool centre with my index finger and rotate the spool until either the tape catches or my wrist breaks.
Someone out there will be able to sort me out, that I'm sure

That's about right. The dextrous seem to do it all in one flick, but you and I have to fumble a bit. On 1" tape, the approved trick was to lick the tip of your finger before dabbing it on the inside of the end of the tape...
Hey stevers,
Believe EC8010. That's the way.
Try to leave the tension arms half way, or where they normally ride when you're done.

Thanks guys. I like the spit bit.
I take it that pulling a bit out sideways as per a 'film' reel is decidedly non-U ?

Absolutely non-U. It puts a bump in the pack which causes a pulse on take-up tension - even the best take-up servos will have trouble ironing that out so that it doesn't make the capstan's servo extra work. It's expensive to scrape tape smoothly past heads, so we should do everything possible to make sure we get value for money out of our Nagra or Studer.
