Any opinions on the use of threaded inserts versus T-nuts for driver mounting? I'm mainly concerned with strength; I've worked with both but have no way to evaluate their relative suitability.
To be more specific, my substrate is MDF and the thickness is 2.25". Fasteners are 10-32.
BTW, I discovered Boltdepot.com today. They have good prices on sometimes hard-to-find items such as black oxide cap head screws and short (1/4") philips machine screws.

I would vote for inserts. I can't begin to recall how many times t-nuts have pushed out when I have been screwing in the drivers, and it always seems to be on the last screw.....

Here is one post I found. It doesn't really answer the question, but there is at least some opinion that the holding power is equivilent.

The Rockler/PE style barbed inserts are recommended for weak substrates like MDF/pine/particle board.

Over both of those, I prefer Parts Express Hurricane nuts. They are strong and they don't back out like some other T-nut styles.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
personally, I prefer T-nuts. I've used inserts a lot and they tend to be a pain to drive in cleanly, especially in mdf. Other T-nut type fasteners, like the 'hurricane' type mentioned above, are even better.
