Thorens TD-160 - what is this part?

The part marked with red arrow. Is it only for transportation, or is there any other purpose? I suppose it protects the motor spindle from hitting by the platter underside, if there is too much swing. Can I safely remove it?

Thanks. I adjusted the platter outer rim to chassis distance to 6 mm with the three screws at the spring suspension. This gives about 1 mm elevation of the arm board from the chassis.
I also applied some bitumenous damping to the subplatter.

I admit that in daily life it is nearly impossible that the platter hits the motor wheel,
but this screw bolt indicates when spring suspension needs some height adjustment.
