The Peltors are excellent, but with the downside of blocking other ambient noise. When I'm putting in a long day in the shop and I don't want to keep putting hearing protection on & off I use these:
Pro Ears | Pro Tac Mag Gold Green | GS-PTM Green | Hearing Protection for Shooting
They are a bit costly but since I use them for shooting the incremental cost in the shop is just the batteries.

On the economic but adequate side, Harbor tool #92851 noise cancelling ear muffs are currently $14.99.

The company i work for uses 3M muffs in the manufacturing plant, i couldn't believe how well they worked when i first put them on, they block more noise then you can by sticking your fingers in your ears.
I use my Ryobi's that take a 4v battery, you can adjust how much noise comes in through a condenser mic. Not the quietest but if I wanted really quiet I would just add some foam in ear plugs like we did in the air force
