The Jante Law and The DIY Community

hi

Question:
Does it in our diyAudio Forums,
:mallet: exist some unwritten laws or codex :mallet:

Each society, community or congregation, in my own experience
has got such unwritten rules for conduct and attitude.
And this is good
as long as these codes of conduct
are good for all individual members and for the group as a whole.

There are unwritten laws,
that can kill off creativity, positive thinking & spirit and ingenuity.
No doubt about it.
I guess most of you, can agree with this.

🙂There are also other communities
that can encourage and support a spirit
that is fruitful for new inventions, ingenuity 🙂

The Jante Law

Definition

There are ten different rules in the law,
but they are all variations on a single theme and
are usually referred to as a homogeneous unit:
Don't think you're anyone special or that you're better than us.

The ten rules are:

1. You shall not think that you are special.
2. You shall not think that you are of the same standing as us.
3. You shall not think that you are smarter than us.
4. Don't fancy yourself as being better than us.
5. You shall not think that you know more than us.
6. You shall not think that you are more important than us.
7. You shall not think that you are good at anything.
8. You shall not laugh at us.
9. You shall not think that anyone cares about you.
10. You shall not think that you can teach us anything.

In the book, those Janters who transgress this unwritten 'law'
are regarded with suspicion and some hostility,
as it goes against communal desire in the town,
which is to preserve social stability and uniformity.

I don't know about the DIY community, but those laws are well known in island life. Small islands, anyway. Don't try to be more important or bigger than anyone else or you'll get smacked down fast. Goes against the "Island Mentality."

Some of that seems to apply here, but it's not a bad thing. 🙂

You shall not think that you can teach us anything.

why would I show up here if i couldn't learn anything?

9. You shall not think that anyone cares about you.

that applies everywhere - if you think somebody cares about you - you might as well shoot yourself right now. If somebody tells you otherwise - he is lying.

You shall not think that you are good at anything.

If i believe that of anybody here - why would I even check out the posts?

You shall not think that you know more than us.

again - if that applies, I might as well read at audiogon....

the rest - I don't care what anybody thinks of himself - as I said - knowbody cares.

Yes 😀
As well as in smaller villages ... in the countryside.

But we should know that somewhat same informal set of rules
exists in clubs or any society or group of people
that get together.

Not to mention in schools.

I beg to differ there, A-K. I have enought kraut in me and my direct cultural-social upbringing...to say with some decent amount of authority... that such thinking is just the kraut in you. 😀

I tend to believe that a given person should be treated with respect, and honour, unless they prove (repeatedly) that they should be avoided. If they cannot be avoided due to locational and other issues, then they should be confronted with their lack of proper capacity for keeping the social atmosphere 'copacetic'.

If that does not work, then attempt all sorts of reasoned enterprise with them. If that does not work, then banish them. If that does not work, then well, you are on your own. The alternatives at that point become, one of personal difficulty in accepting or executing. Through out the entire range of possibilities at any level of social greasing and attempts at working together. For example, I do not have and will never have a single person here on any sort of 'ignore' list. I only heard that we have that sort of capacity here, the other day.

People are not created equal, but good empathetic and similar skills are needed by the individual to maintain a good social and cultural atmosphere. If we are all the same and move toward the lowest common denominator, it is merely socialist garbage, a bit of globalist elite power mongering propoganda, to decimate and control the population down into a minimal toy. These rules are in my powerfully stated opinion, a complete pile of steaming dung of the most vile order. Except for a few. We are all human, and I do not seek to elevate myself above another. The 'I don't think I'm better part', and that covers alot of those stated rules, on it's own. No need for the rest of them. It's as if the rules are stated for the illiterate, to maintain illiteracy and compliance. I take no garbage from my fellow man, either. This I strongly, in no uncertain terms that are 100% non-negotiable, I state. The wall starts here, kinda thing..

Thomas Paine, to some degree. Not all things, we are all individuals. As for a certain large country, it might be time to revitalize the work of that man. At least take a serious public look at it again.

On a final note of the far end of extremism: Even buddhists can and will kill in a flash -a heartbeat-, without even blinking.. if the reasons are strong enough.

Hi lineup,
Many of us (members) do care about each other.
We do want to teach or help fellow members.
We do want to learn from each other.
We do recognise that some of us are better at some things than we are.
We recognise that sometimes we are pretty good at some things too.

Everyone has something to bring to the table here. It could be as simple as some humour and the opportunity for someone to help us. Unless someone is disruptive, I think there is a place here for them.

To be a little clearer - that should be your attitude until you are proven wrong by deeds - not talk. I had lots of talk - always disappointing.

One, or two bad apples so not spoil a whole tree. True.

Off Topic?
What could be more important in a place like this and more On Topic?

😎 Trying Sweeping constructive and balanced questionings under the carpet
is hardly the way to to improvement Anywhere.

These questions I put, is essential to possibly try to improve or keep a good spirit in our forum.

Unfortunately, I have to say, to speak the truth,
it is not the first time www.diyaudio.com
is trying to sweep initiations of such important discussion
under the carpet.

I find this remarkable.
As I know moderators and management here else are doing a pretty fine job.

I know some some critisism posted is only destructive and negative
sometimes even jumps at special persons.
Such should be not be encouraged.

But balanced and questioning topics with the aim to improve things
should always be welcome.
This is my firm opinion - nothing will ever change this.

Change is a way to improvement.
Not allow a healthy debate is not.

Hi lineup,
What could be more ON TOPIC than want diyAudio.com be a good place for us
I think we all do with the exception of the occasional few.
But maybe you like bad apples.
I do like to give them a chance.
I do not.
That's fine. Use your ignore button. Otherwise, who is to decide. We all have different definitions and personalities.
As I know moderators and management here else are doing a pretty fine job.
Thank you! 😀
That's always nice to hear.
