I havent checked in for over a week so I figured why not. I have been slowly receiving all the parts I need to do the work on my Citation II and Fisher 400C. Since my last thread kind of got hijacked by the Citation, I wanted to post some pics and progress on the Fisher 400C.
So taking hints from fellow Fisher fans from the board, I ordered Sprague Orange Drop caps to replace all the dead German Wima caps.
First off, this thing is an ABSOLUTE PITA to get to some of the locations in. I THOUGHT I wanted to find a Citation I to rebuild, but the 400-C was plenty difficult in enough areas. Below you can see my mediocre soldering job. After the results I was kind of sad because mine doesn't look quite as nice as some of the other finished ones I've seen.
When I was giving it a check-up, I found that somebody had put a 6U8 in one of the 12AT7 spots, some of the indicator bulbs were blown, and a couple resistors out of value.
I replaced the E5 bulbs with 12v E5 socket LED's. The sockets only put out about 6.3-7v volts so they are not overpoweringly bright (only a hair brighter than the originals). Glad to know I'll never have to replace those again and the light they make is quite beautiful.
I managed to shop thru my spares and found 2 12AX7's and 1 12AT7 so it now has a full tube compliment. They're not perfect or matched, but they work and test really good.
I cleaned the chassis to some degree. I can't find anything that will remove the tarnish and leave the screen printing behind. I have already accepted that I will probably be redoing it in the future with fresh screen printing, so I'm going to leave the top and front plates as they are for now.
Luckily, the on/off switch works like a GEM on both poles! I will NOT be using the convenience outlets as I might need that other switch leg one day.
For those new to the 400C, the On/Off/Volume switch is nearly un-replaceable so be delicate and DO NOT USE THOSE CONVENIENCE OUTLETS! (They are all switched by that delicate switch, however on 2 separate poles) If your switch goes bad, you might can un-wire (or make permanently hot) the convenience outlets and use the other leg of the switch if it is still good.
So now I'm back at stuck. The Tri-section 30uF cap is weak, and I'm only getting about 230V on B+ (should be 320).
Yee haw.
By the way, I am missing a bottom plate. Would it happen that any of the Fisher fans have one from a gutted chassis they would part with?
