Wouldnt you know it? last minute I think I FINALLY will order the Dayton 15" quatro driver(from partsexpress), and i run into a wee bit more cash. I would like to know if its worth going up to the tempest tover the dayton? Its gonna be getting 240 watts, and the sub will be in a 11x9 ish room. I dont think I will really need the extra headroom on the tempest, but hey, I just might, and you can NEVER have too much headroom 😀. Also its gonna be in a ported(but sealable) sonotube.
Sorry for the FLOOD of questions recently, but im the type of person that gets really nervous about something not meeting their expectations.
The only reason im hesitating really is that there might not be THAT much of a difference, and i need a 5.1 reciever.

I've got a Tempest and it takes quite a beating. I originally had it in a 4cu ft ported enclosure and boy did it "get low". The room it was in would shake, the windows would raddle and the drop ceiling would (no pun intended) drop some white dusty stuff on top of everything in the room. I originally glued some wood molding on the top of the box to provide a little lip to make the enclosure look less like a box and more like a table of sorts and the molding eventually started to seperate off of the enclosure. If you're going ported and want to tune it low, its a great woofer.
I now, because of space requirements, have it in a 1.5cu ft sealed enclosure with a linkwitz transform on it to equalize it down to 20Hz or so. This requires some massive power and excursion, not to mention huge pressure changes, but the sub willingly takes the abuse.
Not having used/seen a quatro in action I can't comment on the comparison, but the tempest is a nice sub for HT, especially if you have to space for a nice vented enclosure.

wow when I calculate it the tempest has another .9 litres of linear displacement. 1.6l to 2.5 l is a pretty big jump. I am aware of teh fantastic build quality on the tempest, bottom line is i wont go WRONG with either driver, i just dont want to end up saying "if i ONLY spent the extra 50!"
If you have alot of space for a big box, a Tempest can't be beat.
With 240W you will have enough.

au contraire mon frere! tumult > tempest. and im not asking if its a GOOD driver, i already know its fantastic, im asking is it worth the extra 50$ over the dayton?
I think it's worth every cent brother.
I think you should even consider a Shiva over that Dayton!

well with your parents I dont know that you're going to be able to turn either sub up to full tilt anyhow
Yeah, you know we're all going to come over from the other thread and tell you that if you can afford $150, you can probably find two 12 inch subs for a vibration canceling configuration!
Two 12" quatros will be just about the same cost as a Tempest, and will have slightly better sensitivity- but the tempest will definitely have greater max SPL.... but with 250 watts available, two 12"s in series may go louder than the tempest. Plus you get the vibration cancelation.
By the way- it's safe to ignore me in this case... ANY of the choices you've listed so far will give you some serious boom- enough to worry a mother, that's for sure... so my rants about vibration cancelation are moot.

Somehow, I think you might have alrerady made up your mind. Be aware that Adire has plans for both sealed and ported enclosures on their web-site and some of them get pretty big (EBS design is 340L). The sonosub I built used 18 inch diameter tube, has an internal volume of 260L and is tuned with a 6 inch diameter port to just under 17Hz. It stands 6 1/2 feet tall.

Unfortunatly, this is very true. From what I have read from your posts, you will want to treat your folks to a night out once in a while so that you can turn up the volume in their absence. It will find every rattle in your room and the rooms downstairs.
I think you will have the same problem no matter which sub you decide upon. The difference will be in how loud and how low it will play. I had to weatherstrip the closet doors in the room with the sub because they rattled. Even the doorknob on the closet door nearest the sub rattled.
Any of the drivers mentioned, the Quatro, Dayton DVC, Tempest, or Shiva will work wonderfully for you. Yes, you can spend more and get a Tumult (over 5 liters displacement), or Parthenon (66 liters or more displacement)... but by then, I hope you will have your own home. I guess what I'm saying is don't overdo it and wreck your family life. Any of the subs will work great in your room. Have fun choosing.

The Tempest is $200 shipped from www.creativesound.ca and may be cheaper than importing the Dayton from the US. Better hurry though because Tempests are running out until Feb.
I built the EBS Tempest and it is great if you have the room.

FWIW, I just finished putting together a Tempest in a 220L box...this thing hammers and I have zero regret in getting the adire over the dayton
Well... im not THAT worried about rattles, my rents jsut get a bit ticked sometimes, like if i watch 2 movies in a row at home. I was just seeing if there was an easy way to stop all this. Besides! my mom doesnt do enough laundry as it is
Its either the extra litre of displacement or 5.1 surround, and both options are tempting as hell.
I think my FINALY descition is
**drum roll PLEASE**
If i cannot get a tempest, meh, I will live with the dayton and buy the 5.1 reciever
If i can get the tempest(or cant get the dayton) then the 5.1 receiver will have to go on hold, and ill buy the tempest.
You guys have been REALLY helpful, so once again, thanks for all the help. I promise as soon as the sub is done you will see pictures on here!

A Tempest in either low Q designs (LowQ Sealed, Adire Alignment vented) are very satisfactory and well worth the money spent.
Re: Tempest Low Q Project
Impressive! Do you have a plan to cover the screws?

Putting it in the closet is the easiest way to cover screws.
And Nice project! I dont often see people using plywood for subwoofer enclosures.
