Telefunken Hymnus 5328 MX console

So I recently purchased Telefunken Hymnus 5328 MX console. It basically all works, the radio needs to be recalibrated, the whole electronic in the back needs to be cleaned and there is low hum. I am not sure what is causing it.

This unit sounds great, the lows and highs are not quite there.

So what I want to do is clean the electronics, so I will need to make sure I am doing that correctly, do any upgrades to the unit and I would like to take the electronics, the interface and the speakers and recreate the console. I want make it more modernized. The design is still in progress.

Would using the current speakers and rebuild the box be a good idea or should I put new speakers in?

I need some impute.

Well, with less than 4 feet between between the speaker enclosures (an I use the term loosely in this case) you`ll never get enough L-R channel separation to get any good imaging whether you change out the original speakers or not, Nor will you be able to make any toe-in adjustments.

At best you might be able to utilize the existing enclosures for LFs or subs and two separate satellite HF-MF enclosures that can give you some true imaging and separation.

But we`d have to know a lot more IMO to give you any meaningful suggestions. This all sounds quite premature until you know what it is you want to accomplish with this unit.

In my opinion the best is to go with the original speakers and the original cabinett. That old consoles are constructed to give a max. good sound with the parts availlable at that time. The amps are in the way unlinear to match the flaws of the speakers and the cabinett has to have resonances to compliment the flaws of the electronics.
Curiosly all together this old thingis sound really wonderfull.
If i can´t stop you to build a new enclosure then please use the original speaker boards to come closer to the old sound.
Stereo basis - don´t care about.
I have heard a lot of stereos sounding like crap and a lot of monos sounding like paradise.
Best luck with your nice telefunken,
Hilmar

I agree with Hilmar 100℅.
Changing this classic is useless, better use your time to make something new.
But careful restoration is probably necessary, and there is a lot you can do, but without details it is hard to say what. But there is an awful lot of information scattered in the net, which can be helpful for detail upgrades, like new psu caps or careful cleaning all the contacts, etc.
I strongly suggest to restore the unit as is, you will be pleased with the result. But do not expect it to sound like a modern device.

I agree that keep it as is and just perform maintenance is the best option. The actual console it's self has some damage to it, if it was solid wood and not pressed wood with veneer over the top. I can rebuild the box using the same specs. That is a large project and I want to start with cleaning the electronics. They have a heavy coat of dust on everything. The previous owner never cleaned them. I believe that it's going to take more then just some compressed air to clean it.

To clean the electronic and tubes, what's the best and safes way?

The best imho is a dry cleaning with a soft brush (for cosmetics). The glas-scale can be cleaned with a soft cloth and perhaps soap-water (be carefull since sometimes the letters and numbers go away with the ceaning😱!!). The knobs with a tooth-brush and soap.
In your first post you say something about a hum-issue.
I don´t know the schematic of your Hymnus but perhaps the rectifier is weak or/and the electrolytics. The best is to renew all the electrolytics and the couplingcaps. If these are failing they can cause serios damage.
Have fun,
Hilmar
