Technical Question - Yamaha CA-810 - everything is in mono

Hi All,

Recently acquired a Yamaha CA-810. Generally works really well, but, when playing with balance control, extreme right and left settings caused sound to go to zero and made no difference right vs. left. So took off the cover and used Deoxit on the volume and balance controls - no change. So it was suggested that I should do same for Stereo/Mono switch - did that and still no change.

But did some cable swapping and realized that with either (or both) Left and Right signals into any input, sounds was in mono - plugging in only right (or only left) source signal played sound in both speakers. So for some reason normal Left and Right signals are not getting through.

I have looked at the schematic, but can find no obvious reason for the result I am getting. Any ideas? Looking around inside, nothing obviously broken or out of place. Cabling/Wiring looks untouched and no real indications of work or miswork having been done on this specimen. Based on reputation and comments, I am interested in getting it running properly. And I can take it to a local tech, but first thought I would check with you all to see if this is something less difficult to fix as a learning opportunity - I have never experienced this before.

Thanks!

Hi,
If you look at the tone control board schematic at the end to the right you can see the mode switch. What the switch does it is to connect the channel A to channel B together. Check the switch for continuity when the switch it is close.

Attached is a picture showing how to check it.
