Tannoy vs Lowther

Hi!

I remember being impressed by someone's Tannoys as a teenager and always wondered how they compared to Lowther . . . so finally I managed to get hold of a Tannoy 12 inch and a Tannoy box and do the test against the entry level Lowther . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ua4BLRIHro is the result

It might be strange to look at testing speakers through YouTube videos and computer speakers - but video compression and computer speakers designed for intelligability of speech actually concentrate on what's most important in a sound . . . and so we experenced a reduced form and quality of the sound without being distracted by the physical presence of the speaker nor the WOW factor of extended response at top and bottom.

Recorded on Zoom H2 and the Tannoy has been normalised in level towards the Lowther - the Lowther is significantly louder than the Tannoy at the same signal level

Best wishes

They are two different beasts and cabinets do have a large effect on the sound.
Fullrange some say lack the upper and lower registers. While the Tannoy's if using dual concentric cone can cover most. I have Monitor Golds and am very pleased as you can cater for your room some way by using the treble and energy dials on the back. I have not heard Lowthers but you have to look at the much higher price ratio to the Tannoy's and see which is worth it.
