Hello everyone. I have been looking at these driver's for a long time. I was wonder if it would be good for t.v. duties? Also there is another tang band driver at the same price. The w6- 789E it's bigger and it needs a bigger box? I was wondering if there is a sound difference ( not the size ) but how the poly cone sounds? If that makes sense? I will be adding a tweeter to what ever driver I will be picking. I was Just wondering if anyone has used any of these driver's and could help me out. Again only using them for t.v. and back round music duties. Thanks for your help. Jeff

Rather depends what you mean by TV duties, how large your room is & how loud you listen. The 1611 is a decent driver of its type; while there are things you wish it did more of (the cone has a lot of self-damping) it doesn't do anything particularly annoying either, which is no bad thing.

The 789 is a wideband woofer rather than a wideband driver (taking the latter in the nominal 'full range' sense of the term). Since it's about done by 6KHz, it will require a tweeter. Purely in terms of the published FR, it should be easy enough to work with; however, I'd be a little cautious on that front, since the impedance plot suggests some HD issues creeping in -what and whether these will be an issue, I can't say. Perhaps, perhaps not.

Hello Scottmoose. We'll t.v. duties means the t.v speakers are off and these will replace them for sound reproduction. ( Sorry I don't always word things right). I have a few set of speakers from planet 10. Paper of course but, They cost to much for the family to oops it's broken. So That's why I was looking at these cheapish speaker's. I could always go with another brand like SB Acoustic or Scan Speak? Also am looking for better then store bought sound and it doesn't have to do anything special. I like how they look and they seem well put together. Also Fostex is my favorite brand but, I don't know if the FF series can take room temperature changes like poly cones? Or I would stick with paper. Jeff

To me the W5 is a really boring driver........tried them a few ways, two way woofer, dedicated mid, and full range..........very blah sound to me.

Hmmm? Thanks for the heads up. Another reason I picked the poly cone was because I liked how my dynaudios sound for movies and t.v. Hummm? I wonder if the SB Acoustics poly woofer sounds Good? Jeff

I performed a listening comparison test with the W5-1611SAF and three other full range drivers. I found the 1611 to be lacking in high frequency reproduction compared to the other three at low volume levels. It really improved in frequency response when I turned up the volume. I am not sure why this would be other than that it may have been an effect of the Fletcher Munson curve. I also found that the 1611 beams the highs so that they fall off when you listen off axis. Overall, I agree with Scottmoose's assessment.

If you want a speaker for TV duties that sounds good with both music and dialogue I can recommend another TB driver, the W5-2143. It is a bit shy in bass response, but in the right cabinet you can get all the bass you would need for normal TV use. It produces a clear and detailed sound with no part of the audio spectrum objectionably pronounced. It is very good off axis so everyone in the room should hear the dialogue easily, with sibilants (ess sounds, for example) clear but not annoying. I doubt that you would need a tweeter.

Thanks for chiming in again and giving your experience with this driver. That w5-2143 looks very nice indeed and it's around the same price ( which I like ) . The room I am using temperature very' s a little ( and I use a heater to warm the room up ). I know this effects the fostex fe series ( one of my favorites I might add ). Have you listened to it next to a fostex driver? Also I would have gone with a Audio Nirvana driver but, I really don't know much about them? I wish they would lower the prices and give more insightful information about the driver's. Well thanks again. You got my thinking and looking at this paper driver. Jeff

Jeffrey - it was a while ago now that I did my listening, but I'm another one of those who found the W5-1611 soft, perhaps "dark"? in the upper midrange/top end - certainly when compared to the FF165WK or Alpair10.3.

That said it (1611) does nothing wrong, and delivers well enough at the bottom end.

Yes that what I was looking for because my wife and child don't care about sound like me. Again use to be a dynaudios fan years ago but, that was then and this is now. Can you explain dark sounding? Jeff
