hi,
I'm planning on integrating my home theater setup with my main stereo system. I'm looking for a surround processor/preamp (dd, dts) but i can only find *really* expensive stuff.
Does anybody know of anything that's not as expensive as the meridian or rotel stuff?

The Technics SH-AC500D comes to mind.
Another option is to just find a surround receiver with preamp outs and use that as a decoder, which would also give you a couple spare channels of amplification if you needed them.

Got this one for really cheap, have it hooked straight up to my amp.
Has had some great reviews, build quality looks good.
Only a few small problems, you have to press the DTS button when you want to decode dts. and I dont think it can do any processing on the line in, inputs (cant do stereo into 5.1 for example). But it can for the digital input.

If you want 6.1 for the future, buy something else.
oh and its not a preamp, it only attenuates the signal.
get an inexpensive surround-sound receiver and just dont use the amps... you can get some decent ones for a few hundred. some of the cheaper denons are great, and most all have pre-outs.
edit:
oops! didnt see this already suggested! sorry. but still a great idea 🙂

I picked up a DPR-1001 really cheap on eBay. 7.1 processing. Analog outs are a little cheesy, but probably as good as anything else in this price range. Although the design isn't top notch, they did spend some time thinking about the board layout.
hi, first post. i have the technics unit listed above which i bought as my first system when it came in a package with a reciever. you are correct about the line input but mine will automatically switch from prologic to dd to dts depending on what i send to it through the digital imputs.
