surface noise in turntable

I have a cheap Rotel turntable that I like to play some of my old vinyl on once in a while. I noticed the other day that the surface noise was much higher in one channel than the other. Does this mean that my cartridge is not aligned properly? It is a standard mount audio technica. I have tried playing with the anti-skate a little with no results. Is the cartridge bad? It is fairly new, but I guess it could have been damaged when we moved not too long ago. If it is an adjustment, what should I look for? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could be that the inner groove is seriously damaged, giving harshness when a transition to a higher level of sound is presented.
Anyway, try to level as much as possible the tt. This makes wonders to avoid clicks and pops.
Are your records new or second hand?

Hi,

It is the same on all records. The sound is not distorted- just has a lot of surface noise in one channel, which is particularly noticeable between tracks.

Are you sure it's not the preamp proper having developped a fault?

Just crank up the volume without any record playng and see if the his unbalance is still present.

Cheers,😉
