I finished my repair on the SMGs and I am astonished with the result. amazingly clear, live sound like nothing I have ever heard, after all was said and done, I paid under $200 for this pair of speakers which is easily worth $500 to me. Thank you all so much

Nice going! I know exactly how happy and excited you feel at the moment.
My (very resourceful and understanding) wife surprised me with a pair of SMGa last year as a birthday present (after some hints...)
My initial excitement was flattened when we plugged in, only to hear buzzing and rattling over a very flat sound. I did some reading, and "off-line" experimentation, then got busy with solvents, glue and two new tweeter fuses....
What a transformation, and what a great pair of speakers. It is great to hear that another pair of Maggies has been brought back to life.

I bought a pair of SMG's from a TV store type place in 1992 for $275. The guy said they sounded awful and I insisted they hook them up anyway (they were hiding behind used TVs). Two fuses later he was picking his jaw off the floor. It was my first introduction into good speakers. I've never forgotten them.

Good job. I remember my first SMGa rebuild. My wife thought I was dissecting a harp.
I was a bit nervous at first, but as I said, the learning curve was pretty easy. Took me 1 whole day to knock out the first speaker, and about 3 hours for the other. Then went to Joanne fabrics for the socks (too cheap to go to Magnepan). Wife and friends were impressed with teh sound. Sold them and bought another pair. And so on.
Did you use Weldwood and 36 guage copper wire for the tweeter coils? They won't ever come loose again with Weldwood.
Don't forget that Milloxane. And don't use too much. It will over-dampen the diaphram.

I cannot obtain any Milloxane as it is pretty cold here in the Midwest, so I have to wait untill may, I used the 31 gauge aluminium wire that came with the kit, I used weld wood to hold it down and *cough* Super 77 *cough* just to make sure everything stayed in place. These is a little too much weight on the diaphram that I will fix when I come home for spring break, it was pretty horrible having to leave my Maggies after having them complete for 1 whole day!
