Subwoofer Replacement Amplifier

Hello,

As my first speaker project I want to replace the broken amplifier on a store bought JBL home theater subwoofer. (It now makes a hum sound when I plug it in, even when not connected to a source. Messing with the volume knob makes no difference) I figure I'll build a subwoofer amplifier kit to save money and to gain more amplifier building experience for future projects.

I have been searching for existing amps but have not found a solid recommendations for my Goals.

My Project Goals/Criteria
-Enough power for Home Theater, (explosions, rumble's etc)
-Low Level Inputs are fine
-Active Crossover so I can somewhat tune the speaker with the satellites
-Power Supply Recommendations
-Around 50-75 USD in price

This is more of a repair, not too concerned with audiophile quality as I am reusing the driver and enclosure. Also the overall quality of the Home Theater system is sufficient for my parents watching DVDs.

It is a bass reflex design and I can probably re-tune the length of the port and add additional stuffing. The Driver is 10 Inches and the box dimensions on the outside are 16Lx12 1/2Wx 17H (inches).

As always your recommendations and advice are greatly appreciated. 😎

I think I've decided that a kit is not the best option at the moment. I was looking at this

but its already 75 USD and it doesn't come with a crossover, PS, and connectors.

Instead, I will use a plate amp special from parts express. It has everything I need and at a decent price.

If I'm going to do DIY, I might as well start from the bottom up to get the most benefit. I'll probably build a subwoofer later, after I build my full range fe167 ML TLs.

Any criticism before I make the order?

Thanks for all your advice.

I will be getting one of the plate amps just so I can get the sub working right away. The recommendations you guys gave were great but my dad said to order the amp before you guys responded.

However, now I have more sub amp sources.

As for the broken amplifier, I'll probably go with Richie and repair it. It will take more time but thats OK because I can work on these projects whenever I have the time. I think it would make a good Tactile Transducer amp for my computer chair for gaming.
