Subwoofer built into audio/tv shelf

Hello all. New to this site, enjoying the amazing amount of knowledge that you all have shared!

Moving into a new house where having a subwoofer box sitting in the room is not a good option. In-wall is tough as the a/v equipment is on an external wall.

As far as needs, i do like some good clean clean bass but don't need anything extreme. Like to add a little punch to movies and also to listen to some jazz/ambient/rock music. As a point of reference, i currently have a Velodyne VX-10B (10", 150W) in a 20x20 room and i'm satisfied with the bass it produces.

I have an idea for building a custom 4-5 inch thick mfd shelf and housing a shallow sub (or 2) and a plate sub AMP on the bottom---firing down to the floor. Shelf will sit something like 24" off the ground so sub/amp will not be noticeable. Based on wall space, shelf can be up to 50" wide and 18"deep.

I would place the a/v components on top of the shelf and mount the TV and speakers on the wall. Shelf/cabinet fabrication is not an issue in terms of woodwork/finish but I would like some input around:

1. Will the vibrations from the sub impact a/v equipment sitting on shelf?
2. What considerations should i be including given the wide/flat cabinet?
3. Will it be a problem (heat) to mount a plate amp the underside of the shelf?
4. What else?

thanks. As to pointing the drivers towards the floor, i really don't see any other way if they are going to be out of sight. My only other option is to have them face up out of the top of the shelf...not really feasible. Can;t have them pointing sideway out of the sides of the shelf since the thickness of the shelf will only be 4-5".

Maybe i'm missing the point.

Hi,

The only opening that would be visible is a narrow slot or a round circle= a~third of the driver effective cone area.Example if a 10" driver is picked the visibly area would be 1. A circle with diameter= 12 cm or 2. a slot: 5 x 23 (cm^2)

b🙂
