I have a surround sound subwoofer with four external speakers. It is powered and has two 3.5mm audio jacks, one for the front and one for the back. Could I plug that into a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter and plug that straight into my bass and use the sub system as an amp? The bass has no preamp, but I have the components to make a simple one if needed.
You *may* use it, but:
1) it may be extremely dull, most subwoofers cut everything above 150 to 250Hz.
2) no problem for home practicing, but it probably won't match a drummer or other players (unless they use 15W`practice amps) , subwoofers get real deep, but pay for that with much reduced efficiency/sensitivity.
Anyway, try it and post results 🙂
