subwoofer amp

My front channel diy's (mark II) are nearing completion.... and my thoughts turn to 5.1/DTS etc etc
When I get my DTS decoder, my stereo receiver will be surplus....

question

Can I then use this as a subwoofer amp instead of using a plate amp??? would represent a nice saving if I could.....

I have zero ideas as to what a DVC sub is.....

my question is, can I build a diy sub without a plate amp, but use a normal amplifier instead, ie mounted remote to the sub..... I fairly sure I could - is there any reasons as to why I can't do this......

DVC = dual voice coil..

means you can connect left and right outputs to 1 speaker...

I'd probably go for 2x 10" or 2x12" using both channels of your spare amp..
You'll be using your D.D processors sub crossover, so the only thing you'll miss by not having a plate amp is the variable phase knob....TBH, it makes no differnce on my sub(in my room🙂 ), and you've always got the option of swapping the speaker leads to go 180 degrees out of phase...

You might be concerned with power output thought, depending on whether the amp shares it's power supply or not.

You could, but using twin drivers would gain you 6Db output, which is huge in a home cinema environment(where you need big, clean spl's) ie, at a given spl, the twin unit will be using a quarter of the power of the single unit..unless your stereo amp is a 400 watter you'd be better off using 2 drivers...

I have a single shiva with DVC that i drive with the 2 channels from one of my NAD7020s. Works fine.
