Sub Help Needed

Hi everyone, thanks for any help u can give me in advance.

I decided about 4 months ago that wow.. my Scion really could use some blaring tunes.. so i went a "little" crazy on my system considering the limited funds i have.. (works at a local fast food restraunt).. and well i bought in a lump sum, A 7" in dash dvd player (Pioneers AVHP7500DVD or something fairly close to that), Then also i bought the Kicker 1200X1 Class D amp, With that came the 2 Kicker 12" Solobaric L7's, also i bought a box.. im not a very good carpenter to begin with.. so i got the R/T's eXtreme dual 12" with 1" thick MDF wals. So then when it all came in the mail i just sat it all in front of me for a while.. and said.. hmm whats missing.. ah yes.. wiring.. so i went to a local audio store and said i was looking for wire.. i noticed that they had kicker wiring so i went and bought the 0-gauge power wire and then the 12 gauge twisted pair for the subs.. then i went outside and carefully installed everything. after about.. 3 weeks.. it was finished haha.. Everything was going good for about a week or so.. then i turned it up a bit.. high i would say.. but then i heard the worst noise i have ever heard .. ever.. for some unknown reason when my subs hit low and hard.. they have a REALLY loud FLAP noise like its hitting something.. a noise like someone sticking playing cards in the spokes of ur bicycle tires or something.. and now just when its playing fairly "loud" it sounds like a snare drum.. without the strings being tightend.. sorry for the lame analogys but thats the only way i think i can describe it.. i just dont know whats wrong.. the wiring is right, and the box is 1 cu. ft. which thats mid range for what the rec was on the sub reqs.. Sorry this was so long but im just so frustrated.. i have a $4500 system and my friends set of out of the box 50 watt sonys with a missmatched equip sounds better then mine.. and thats on his worst day.. if u need any more info just ask.. i will give ya whatever info is needed.. im pretty desprate.. .. im only around 75 miles from stillwater anyways.. if nothing helps im just gonna go throw them out in the Kicker parking lot and drive off.. gah..

its a sealed box, i was looking up the popping noise on some other sites and i found out a few people have had this problem.. its only when i turn up the volume fairly high.. but see.. its not really loud.. and well.. they dont really go in.. like when it hits a "low" freq. it just sits there and bairly vibrates.. =[.. i donno whats wrong im just scared that they may be blown or something.. ive never had subs before so i dont really know what a blown speaker sounds like..

But at low volume they sound 'ok' right?

Sounds to me like you super heated your voice coils and the windings came off. Since you mentioned you have these drivers in a sealed box, take one (or both) out and tap on the cones. If you hear the same thing, that's your problem. Recone time...

I'm assuming based on the model number of your Kicker amp that it is ~1200watts x 1, right? A fair bt of power, and current draw. Interestingly enough, it doesn't take long for a high power system to drain a car battery. When that happens the music quality degrades quite rapidly. What was once earth thundering bass becomes more like a 'thuk thuk' sound and everything just begins to die.

Take this into consideration as well, especially if this is your first big(er) car stereo. Make sure your alternator is up to the task of keeping up with your system.

wow thanx for the info, i havent taken them out yet.. but i will check how u said, i sure hope there is nothing wrong though.. i hope its just that i need a better alternater and a stronger battery, i do have a 1 farad capacitor.. but ive heard that its kinda small for what i have.. =\ so if i get them out of the box.. and its not the problem.. i will go out and buy an optima and a larger farad cap.. also ide like to buy a better alternator.. but i havent really found a good site for performance alternators..

yall have been a big help.. i was dumbfounded by this.. considering the lack of knowledge i have on audio.. this site is awesome.. and all of u are too.. gah.. now.. time 2 go crack open the ole box and pray/peck on those subs.. later

Well, first things first... Check those drivers out. If their blown, at least you know what your problem is - I would think reconing would be cheaper than replacing your alternator or getting a larger battery. Who knows, you might even get it done under warranty...

To fix the problem long term, you have a variety of options:

* know the limits of your system and don't crank it that high
* acquire higher efficiency drivers that will play louder with the same amount of power
* go with a bass reflex cabinet
* increase your amplifier power
* all of the above

I doubt simply adding another cap in the line is going to help you. Check the archives - I believe this topic has come up a couple hundred times in the past.
