Sub Amps: XTI4000 and Peavey CS4080HZ

I had been using a single XTI4000 for sub use. After reading about how it lacks in really low bass, I decided to up the juice to my 4 15s and get two Peavey CS4080HZs. Even using a single CS4080HZ in stereo mode it was clear that the Crown amp was really lacking in the sub bass dept.

The Peavey blew me away with the low end control. The exact same subs were so tight compared to the single note bass from the Crown....and it was apparent at any volume level. they make 4000 watts in an 8 ohm load which is two TC sounds 15's in series and about where they are alive power wise.

The Peaveys come with a 5 year warranty and I got them for 1100 each shipped from Musician's friend, an authorized dealer. I could have gotten them much cheaper but then you have issues.

The CS4080HZ running an 8 ohm load bridged has really great damping factor and high rail voltage. Running super low impedances really cuts down an amp's ability to keep things sounding tight. The crown in bridged mode was a joke; one note bass in exchange for the claimed 3200 watts. I retired it to run my front mains at 1200 watts each.

The peavey is heavy at 50+lbs each and the first two didnt survive UPS as the packing was really bad. The front faceplates are cast and they shattered from being dropped. They went back and the replacements came via Fedex air who treated them much better. Try to get the vendor to double box them.

SQ wise they are a slam dunk. I also had on hand Bryston amps for comparison with quality. Some love Peavey, others hate them. I would definitely get them again.

Peaveys are next to each corner sub:

A single peavey playing along loud (bright blue lights) with no clip lights at any volume I could stand. Two of them at 4000 a side was all that much cleaner and more headroom. Big power supplies and big power. This amp has been around for a really long time. 16 foot screen in a 22x22x10 room.

When you read about guys hating on these amps or saying they arent reliable, there is a simple truth to be noted. The amps are designed for sub use at 8 ohms. Why? At this power level, a 2 ohm load has way more interaction with the speaker wire thus they use 8 ohm loads for 2 4ohm subs. If you try to run 4 ohm loads bridged, it turns off. If you need a 4 ohm load bridged, you use their CS4000 which is 2 ohm stereo and 4000 watts at 4 oms bridged.

I posted to make a data point available for anyone looking for a great amp. There wasnt much feedback from HT guys on this amp. Just thought I share. No, a Behringer 4000 isnt the same thing.

I forgot to talk about the fans. When the amp is turned on the fans are off. After big bass output for a time they spool up but you cant hear them over the XTI4000 amp's fans----at idle. They are never loud and no matter how hard I push the amps, they are never even much more than warm to the touch. The fans slow pretty fast because of this. The XTI4000 on the other hand takes a few minutes to get quiet.

At 10-12 feet from the screen and amps, the fans never drew attention to themselves unless I pause the movie/music and even then, the peaveys were still very quiet. Fans arent an issue.😀
