I'm planning to put a double din head unit in my older Porsche. My plan is to buy an aftermarket steering wheel and put 4 momentary switches in the aluminum webbing of the wheel, for volume up/down and radio station change. I will run these through a clock spring with sufficient terminals, which I've found for my car. I don't want any other features. I've seen a few generic head units on ebay whose description say
"Features 2: Support steering wheel control"
Does that mean there will be wires from the head unit that can be used for this?
I would rather not use a control box such as the ASCW-1.
Here is an example of one of the units ebay head unit with steering wheel control

Have you looked up various head units with steering wheel interface to see what they used as an interface connection? Crutchfield has the owner's manual for every piece they sell so looking up the connections for each there should be easy.
That's a great idea! I found a wiring diagram for one generic ebay unit that claimed steering wheel control. It only had one wire going to the steering wheel control so I figured that was not what I want. Furthermore, watching a video on the ASCW-1 makes me think I do need something like that, but also that it might not even work for the simple circuit I'm envisioning.
