Stage drop / drapes / curtains

Recently I’ve tried hanging thick blankets behind the loudspeakers with, what I (still) think is great results (I haven’t tried any tweeking).
I hung them half a meter or so out from the wall and covered the back wall from floor to ceiling.

This isn’t the only corrections I’ve made but I think it made a good bit of improvement.

So here´s to my questions.
I’d like to upgrade to thick fabric (called molton I believe). Would you suggest the 300g/m2 or 500g/m2 version. Price per gram is the same and not super expensive (14 and 23 usd per meter).
Would there be any reason to buy the thinner one and buy more of it in order to fold/crease it more. There’s always the possibility to buy more later if I would go for the heavy one. It might even be beneficial to get as heavy as possible?

And the second question. Would you go for some diffusion in the middle of the speakers or as I tried this far, damp all of the back wall?

For information. My room is quite small. Say 3,5x5 meters (I can’t remember the actual measurements. I’m currently playing on ESL63 loudspeakers with >1 meters space from the back wall. And will be trying some other DIY dipole / OB speakers I’m building.
I also have some BAD diffusers on the first reflection / side walls and back wall.
Will your suggestions on room treatment differ for dipoles?

And last of all.. Is there any forum section for room treatment?

Best regards,
Fredrik

> 3,5x5 meters

I've monitored live recordings in say 1.5m X 2m. IMHO, even 3.5x5 is too darn small. The reverberant field is highly colored with midrange modes.

The least-bad fix may be to make the room DEAD. To extend deadness to the lower bass may need a meter of fuzz on at least three surfaces. This would be intrusive. You still have too-early reflections from the other three surfaces, so they should be midrange-dead, 10+cm of fuzz (or curtain).

I have doubts about dipoles (including classic electrostats) in such a space. The '63 appear to be different but I do not know them.

_ME_, if I had to "work" in such a space, I would consider near-field monitors much closer to my ears than to any surface. This is what kinda-worked in that old small monitoring room. If you stood the right spot, so both speakers were an easy reach, you could almost believe you were out in the concert hall. If you stepped back you knew you were in a concrete closet.

I'm not sure about more/thinner or thicker. The acoustical difference may be small, and I would look at labor and hardware costs. Buying and screwing a hundred hooks is not my idea of fun.

There ARE whole forums for acoustic treatment. Most aim more at studios than homes. All will say you want as much space as possible (toward 10+ meters).

A bigger room would be better but impossible since that's the room I've got.

Also. If I would to guess. Most people (in Europe at least) don't have rooms much bigger than mine.

Regarding near field listening. It might be worth a try.
I'll look answers in some other forum. Thanks.
