hi guys,
im planning on buying a squeezebox and making it as my main transport.
before i do so, i would like to know your opinions and expertise.
my current system consists of: shigaclone transport connected to DAC then to 6v6amp,
1. could squeezebox better a cd transport? if so, how did you implement it?
2.im going to use a pc as storage. do i need to have to upgrade hardware and power supplies of the pc or just plain stock pc will do? (pc will be 10ft away from listening rm.)
thanks guys,🙂

The Squeezebox used as a transport MIGHT better a CD transport, but I've never had a good CD transport 😉
There's some projects around here somewhere where people have upgraded the squeezebox transporter's power supply and tapped the I2S lines - probably worth checking out if you want properly high quality.
No, there's no need to change anything on the PC side, there's so many layers of abstraction involved (most of them digital, anyway) that you will derive no benefit whatsoever.

Totally agree, I have a Squeezebox in our lounge room and find it works a treat. We have a wireless network and the Squeezebox Server PC is in my study at the back of the house and have no communications problems. The PC is a pretty fast P4, no problems there.
The only mod that I have done to the Squeezebox is to build a linear supply and dump the wall wart.
Cheers.. Steve

I have a sqeezebox system also and really like it. I have several SB over the house and run them from a 4 year old PC with no trouble at all. I have one modded SB (power supply and bypassed op amp) which sounds marginally better than stock, but even stock sounds very good. If you currently have CDs, make sure you rip them as FLACs or other lossless format.

Just as good, with the advantage of not having to get up and change CDs 🙂
I second this question as I am also (waiting for) the Squeezie Touch when it comes out. Does it approach hi-end or does it benefit from an additional hi-end DAC?
Oops think I just answered my own question having read the link in the previous post. Great mods and I think the addition of an outboard DAC will do the trick. I think I have found my solution!🙂
yeah. that crazy polish guy has A LOT of great mods. 😉
he just like to experiment 🙄 I am always laughing when reading "how SPDIF signal can be improved by direct RCA connection from output" 😀
Better to read this
The SB3/SPDIF output thread.......
and this
Modifying the Logitech (Slim Devices) SB3.
SB as transport
I have been using ans SB3 for several years and have gone through some different upgrades. I started a while ago with the full Bolder Cables mods, used the internal dac and then later external. The present incarnation has the Empirical Audio Pace Car upgrade feeding i2s to an Aya II dac. I am running a wired QNAS server and am very pleased with the sound. To me, it betters a regular CD transport that I have, a HIFIDIY kit, as the data is bit perfect and I believe is transmitted with less jitter. Given the quality and convenience of this setup, I am not interested in going back to spinning cds.

I will second the idea that a well implemented Squeezebox based system can replace a CD based system. Mine just has!
I have a standard Squeezebox 3 connected to RAKK DAC mkII. 6 year old PC (Pentium 4, 2,8 GHz, 3GB memory) which is also my PC that I work on at home. 611GB of FLAC's on an external USB hard disk. No hickups ever. Needless to say it has replaced my CD based system.
I am planning to get a SB touch though because John Swenson says the digital out is (spdif) is better than the SB3's.

Bas - I can't comment on Touch. I decided in the end to go for the Duet. I love the interface and for me it was the right decision. The sound, with an outboard DAC is awesome.
The duet is actually closer to what I as an audiophile would prefer. No silly screen. 🙂I decided in the end to go for the Duet
Then screen can switched off on SB Touch 😉 and can use iphone/ipod to control the player from everywere in your home, and sounds very well 😉

On some CD's, the tracks flow together and become a complete piece without gaps between the tracks. Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, and others use this a lot. How well is this handled by the Squeezebox when playing FLAC from a uPNP server?

I know this is a thread about the squeezebox, but how does the sonos compare to it, is it as good or better ?
