You know, looking at all the DIY driver stuff cropping up lately (yes I know a lot of it is my fault 🙄 ) I think maybe it's time for a separate loudspeaker forum for DIY drivers.
I know someone (Planet10?) suggested splitting the forums before, and it never went anywhere, but I don't think the idea of a DIY driver forum came up during that exchange.
Feedback?

This will happen soon... just a few at 1st, and more as we see what happens.

Perhaps a couple of categories for loudspeaker much like in the amplifiers section, perhaps have separate for line arrays, single driver systems, PA and then general, but not separate for subs as there is always diysubs.org which is already around.
Just an idea, its probably alreayd been thought of but just my 2cents.

Actually i'd really like to hear ideas.

Well if you after input then i may as well give you my reasons for that idea. It is because when i am looking in the forum i am not currently interested in those topics, i want to try them at a later date but not yet, and i think that the option of looking at a forum section would make answers easier to get and it would also not get bumped down at the speed of light if its not overly popular. I have found in the past that ive no gotten answers due to it being bumped down within 6hours.
So in terms of categories maybe, general, subwoofers, PA, single driver systems, line arrays. This way you get more specific answers to exotic speaker designs.

Michael Lane

I agree with Bill, but i also think that a forum just for them may bring people to consider doing it and bring many to actually trying it. I never would have thought you could build an LCD projector till checking out the video section. Never know, maybe someone will release a diy driver KIT including all parts and some glue. bring a new meaning to value for money. darn now im getting interested in my own idea, i better stop, i bet skinny will follow me on this one.

I would love to have a separate ESL forum

A driver section may not be limited to just scratch built drivers, it could entail anything having to do with drivers, such as modifications.
I think maybe a cabinet forum and a electronics forum would probably be more popular, as those seem to be the two biggest topics here.

Dave,
Would there be any problems in making a whole heap of trial forums and see which ones are popular after 2 months or something, then delete the boring ones and include them into general or EXOTIC category.

I think that it would be a good idea to have separate forums for say general, transmission line speakers, horn (and TQWT) speakers, open baffle speakers (incl ESL), home theatre speakers, subwoofer projects (any type), kit speakers, speaker cables and speaker design software.
Sure would make it easier to track down specific items of interest from past posts.

This is something that we do not want to do. We'd rather be conservative and have to add more forums later than find out in a couple months that we have to undo a bunch of the changes we made.
Instead of dividing it into different kinds of loudspeakers what about different sections of the speakers, so we could have..
Newbie guide - newbies come for general questions on what to build
Cabinet design - all cabinet designs and construction methods go here for all standard types of cabinets (ported, sealed, PR)
Exotic Cabinet design- Things like TL's, Line array, spheres, horns, etc
Crossover Design - a place where you can ask about crossover design and construction
Project hive - here you can ask about idea on loudspeakers, show off you new ones, ask for recomendations that, show your progress.
Just another idea, not my favourite but maybe it will spring something. just my 2cents again😛

What we need to do is not have categories that are ill-defined.
Newbie guide for instance means different things to different people.
Cabinet design is really tied in with crossover design if you do things properly.
Exotic cabinet design is also quite ambiguous.

it was just an idea, notice i also stated that it was just an idea and that i liked other ones better, just throwing ideas out, perhaps others may get ideas from it. Thats what we are here for, Thanks for pointing out the faults in my idea.
I still think that different speaker types are the way to go for categories.

I like your ideas in general Michael, but as Nuuk points out it needs to be thought through, well enough so that people can quickly and easily choose the correct category.
I think one for each popular type of loading might be good - ported, sealed, TL, horn, OB, others. Splitting beyond that will cause many topics to not fit neatly within one place, probably the reason we don't currently have anything more than 'loudspeakers'.
I don't see why a cabinet forum can't be separate though, except that it would have to be 'cabinet construction techniques' or similar, to remove it slightly from x-over and driver considerations (baffle step, driver spacing etc).
Now you've collected my

Actually, I like the idea of a newbie section for most of our forums. A "Getting Started" section, FAQs and basic links, recommendations on basic tools and equipment needed (how many times have we seen THAT question asked?), that sort of thing.
on the newbie topic maybe have permanent thread where people can post documented speaker projects for newbs to follow, so we could have say a $100-300 thread, then a $301-$500 thread, then 500-1000, then 1000-2000, then 2000+mmmmmm
I agree. With books too, I only have a few audio-related books, and one reason I don't have any more than that is I've not really stumbled onto enough recommendations.SY said:

Sorry if I gave the impression I was rubbishing your ideas Michael, that wasn't the intention. I was just engaging the debate. 😉
