Due to positive comments about the Fostex FE166E (see Nelson Pass` article) I have been very interested on this driver. The system I have been thinking about consists of two small sealed enclosures for frequency range from +/- 200 Hz up to 20Khz. I had first thought about using the 3" FF85K, but the lower sensitivity, the smaller surface area and the lower power handling of seem to place the FE166E above it. The FF85K can probably build an very good system anyway.
I have doubts as to the size of the cabinets: a 7 lt cabinet gives a flat response down to 163 Hz and a Qtc of 0,79 and a -3db point at 92Hz. What qtc I should be aiming at for this application?
I have thought I want to place the enclosures completely against the back wall to avoid having to compensate for baffle step. baffle sizes that place the BS frequency below the intended frequency range are too big. One could think of a pillow-like enclosure that could be hanged from the wall. Should this work better than active correction?
The system will be active and I could add an active high pass filter for the Fostex`s but I dont know if it is better to let the acusticall response to fall down naturally.
Below this freq range come one or two subs. My room is about 22 mt2 large and maybe just one could do the trick in such a room. I think dipole woofer would be great, but the price of large drivers is somewhat too high. Any suggestions for a nice inexpensive (+/- < 100 us) sub?

I am working on a similar setup, so I'm still learning as well.... from what I know though.... I would go with a Qtc of around .65-.7. As for placing the driver against the back wall, I don't believe this is really a fix for the baffle step. You could either go with a baffle step correction circuct or let the bottom end overlap the fostex to fill in for the baffle step losses. If you go for this I would look into a pro sound woofer which I will believe will better match the sound of your fostex with a paper cone and good dynamics. I hope this helps. Let me know what you end up with, right now I'm building a sealed enclosure for my fostex 108, and am going to fill the bottom in with a Eminence Delta 12lf. However I've been thinking a lager driver would be nice for the added effeciency/dynamics.
