Speaker Enclosure Manufacturers.

Hi everybody!

I know that my question might offend some DIY-ers.

I tried googling it and searched through this forum, but I still can't find any answers... So, I'm asking more experienced DIY-ers:

Could you please refer me to the manufacturers of speaker enclosures. I am looking for a floor-standing enclosures, but I am still open to any suggestions. Parts-Express sell only bookshelf speaker enclosures, and I am little suspicious when other sited to not provide photographs of sample enclosures.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Finding a cabinet manufacturer might not be very helpfull as the cabinets can become good speakers only with the correct drive units matching.Do you already have any drivers? These(especially the woofer)will determine the cabinets internal volume.

PartsExpress also for prefabbed cabs - but again the Canada shipping? Not sure.

One company that I know of makes cabinets to order:

www.steinaudio.com - I haven't used them (yet) but their site seems to indicate good workmanship and competent knowledge of what it takes to build a good loudspeaker enclosure.

The nice thing is you can design your own cabs based on the project you want to do, then just give them the details. They will ship you the finished product or just the cut pieces if you want - then you can assemble & finish them yourself.

I don't have the room, tools, etc. to build good cabs, so sooner or later I'm gonna put these guys to the test.

And they ship worldwide!

So, basically, if I got this right, affordable finished speaker cabinets are only available from madisound and part-express, with only one available floor-standing model from madisound.

Meaning that all of you guys and gals are making your own cabinets?

Purchasing a speaker kit is too boring, for it is almost ready speaker. There are two options left: either build speaker from scratch or purchase cabinet and play with speakers and crossover. If someone wants to build own more or less affordable speaker, one has to have all the wood-working equipment, or choose from two companies who sell cabinets... This cannot be right, I'm sure I am missing something. There should be more companies who sell finished speaker cabinets.

You know more than me! Help me out please! There should be some list of the companies who produce cabinets, right?

An intermediate option that I've used in the past (not being Woody the Woodsman myself) would be to find some old speakers boxes from old speakers that are approximately the size you're looking for. All thats needed from that point is to make a new baffle board and refinish the cabinet. There are any number of sources for old speakers with broken drivers on the internet, garage sales, et al. You will still need some level of wood working skills/equipment but at least you'll have a good head start.

Basically, yes. Either that or we buy from PE or Madisound. Before PE and Madisound got into the prebuilt box market, a few individuals like Dan Wesnor and John at DiyBox used to sell cabinets. John still does. I don't think he's been mentioned yet:

His prices are reasonable. People with more cash commission boxes from more expensive builders like Lee Taylor.

This is a small hobby. The number of people worldwide who read Zaph's blog, for instance, is only around 3000. Since a sizeable percentage of those people build their own cabinets, it's not hard to believe that there are only a handful of commercial vendors needed to service the rest of the market. The PE and Madisound cabs really are very good, and a good deal. They're not overcharging.

The bar for building your own cabinets isn't that high either. All you need is someone to make a few MDF cuts for you. Glue up you can do at home. Ask around where you work or at school to find someone with a table saw. Most wood vendors will do cuts for you too for a reasonable price, though it's best to stick with an actual wood store, not Home Depot (they are not accurate). If you can't figure anything out, Ryobi sells an introductory table saw for $99. After that, the only tools you need are something to cut holes and a drill. You can rent a router at Home Depot for under $20. Or you can use a Dremel with a circle cutter attachment. I know one guy who even cut holes with a jigsaw. Finally, if you don't own a handheld power drill, you should buy one. Corded drills are very inexpensive, and you'll need one later in life anyway (a drill is the most useful household/apartment tool). You can do it! I live in an apartment, only own a few handheld tools, and am almost finished a pair of Zaph's floorstanding Waveguide TMMs.
