Hi
I'm a beginner making my first boombox for a school project. It's going to be really simple as I will plug it into the mains and I will just have the amplifier and two full range speakers in the box. I've had a look at mini Hifi amps and I found this one 700W Mini Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier Amp mp3 iPod Motorcycle 12V | eBay
Would this be suitable? I know very little about matching the amplifier to speakers. All I know is that I want 4 ohm speakers as the amplifier produces 25W at 4 ohms. Can people advise me on what specifications I should be looking for in speaker cones so that I get a good volume from them without getting clipping or other problems. If you have any particular recommendations that would also be great!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks already
Sam

HiVi Research B3N from IPL Acoustics. They are 8 ohm nominal, but it's not really going to matter that much.
Thanks for the advice but I think I find them a bit small... I would prefer something that is a bit bigger and produces a better sound. What are the specifications I should be looking for? Would car speakers with the right specifications also be suitable?
Thanks again

OK, for a portable boom box I thought you would need small speakers.
Car speakers are good in terms of durability, but tend to be suited to larger enclosures. For what you are doing they would probably be fine.
If you wanted to get a bit more into it, you could use a bigger fullrange driver and design a box using the Thiele-Small parameters. If you wanted to get even more into it you could choose a 2 way design and build a rudimentary crossover. It wouldn't be brilliant, but for appreciation of the concept of filters it would be OK.

Yeah I'm not too bothered about the size of the box. Full range speakers sound better than a two way design as I would like to avoid the hassle of crossovers. With the amplifier above, how many watts should I be looking for in the drivers?
Thanks

Don't worry about speaker wattage, anything in the size range and budget you have will be around 20-60 real watts which will be fine.
Okay great so could it power something like this TRIO KENWOOD LSK-200II 3 Way 60 Watt Hi Fi HiFi Stereo Bookshelf Speakers | eBay even though it has an impedance of 8 ohms?
For a school boombox project, 10 real watts per channel of amp power should be fine. You would be surprised how loud things can be with just a few watts.
The old ghetto blasters of the 80s would typically be no more than 5 real watts in total.

Please note that that amplifier is NO WAY 700W. It is in FACT only about 12.5W per channel. It's also pretty ghastly with about 10% THD.

Andrew T, I don't know which part of the advert you read.
Feature
- T-Amp IC Tripath TA2020-20
- Output Power 2 x 25W @ 4ohm, 2 x 12W @ 8ohm
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) 98dB
- Dynamic Range 98dB
- IHF-IM Distortion 0.1% @ 1W, 4ohm
- THD Distortion
- >0.03% @ 9W, 4ohm
- >0.1% @ 10W 4ohm
- 0.1% @ 6W 8ohm
- >10% @ 23W 4ohm
- 10% @ 13W 8ohm

0.1% @ 6W 8ohm.................
Yep, but that's where they are quoting the lowest THD.
The amp is 2 x 12W into 8 Ohms, so it's going to be capable of slightly more than that into 6 Ohms (not that you see too many 6 Ohm speakers).

Much high than 0.1% and the clipping is gross.
I have seen posts showing what the waveform looked like with 0.5% of distortion caused by clipping.
It was terrible.

I would drop that amp like a hot potato, they really are cr*p.
Do you have a better recommendation for a similar price?
Thanks for everything
