speaker cabinet material

I realize that this is *completely* against common practice, but I've been toying with the idea of going with a stiff cabinet material instead of MDF. Thinking of going with stiffened industrial grade plywood, since going with solid woods would be a nightmare to work with. I realize there will be ringing issues, but I think there are issues with using MDF. I know when I've used MDF for shelving under components, and then changed it to something stiffer, the improvements in dynamics, tonal color, etc. were VERY obvious. I know that using a stiff material for the bass cabinet is not such a big issue because the resonant frequency (if properly braced) is usually high enough that it won't get excited by the woofers.

There are speakers out there that follow this line of thinking. I was wondering if anyone here has experimented with rigid materials v.s. damped materials with their enclosures.

just cutting some cabinets tomorrow

for an entirely "utilitarian" set of speakers -- and we are going to use particle board shelving with melamine veneer. I have a 12 inch contractor saw which will cut beveled edges. It's a quick job for computer speakers. and using the melamine coated particleboard will save a lot of time.

........none of these links address my query: Rigid cabinets (a la Lumenwhite and ......?) versus Damped cabinets. I'm going to build 2 pairs of coarse prototype Mid/Tweeter enclosures out of each type (rigid or damped) of material. I'll post my observations. Still interested in hearing from anyone with this type of experience.
