SPDIF STEREO Uncompressed: Is Sampling >48KHz necessary?

Hello all,

I am new to digital design and have a basic question, kindly bere with me.

For any digital UNCOMPRESSED STEREO source,received through SPDIF, (music/ movies, original/ pirated, CD/ DVD/ BluRay), is the maximum sampling 48KHz or does it go higher upto 192-216KHz?

What media uses sampling > 48KHz for SPDIF UNCOMPRESSED STEREO?
