I was wondering if you guys might have a good recommendation for a company that does custom-wound toroids for power supply use. I have gotten a quote from Plitron, and it was out of my price range. The only other place that has come recommended to me is Victoria Magnetics... any other places I should check?
Quite a few years back I got a catalog from Toroid Corporation of Maryland that did custom transformers.. their website is www.toroid.com (imagine that). The copyright at the bottom of the site says 2004, hopefully they're still around, worth checking out anyway.
Yellow Pages. Lots of places will make non standard power transformers provided you don't want something too 'odd' to them and usually not at too much additional cost. Make some calls.
DIY? Just buy the core and some wire. So easy that even a 2-year-old can do it.

If you don't include a thermal fuse in your power transformer, then you might find your lovely house burnt to the ground (if you're in the habit of leaving your amplifiers on). Not having one is illegal in this country. See Rod Elliot's Transformer Article. For the little chokes, no problem...
luvdunhill, most of the standard Antrim range over here would cover anything that I'm looking for, and I'm assuming Plitron would be the same where you are. What, specifically, are you looking for that doesn't come in the standard range?

If you're in a larger city, there's probably some local outfit that makes transformers. In Vancouver BC, that would have been Best Coil (who are now out in the wilds of Surrey). It's slightly possible they may have some seconds or unclaimed transformers you could get cheap and modify or use as cores.
hi, sorry for the slow reply.. thanks for all the help! My requirements are 2 x 330VAC/150mA at a minimum and possibly some extra filament supplies, i.e. 2 x 6.3V/5A.
If you're on the east coast of the USA (actually anywhere in the USA) these guys Bridgeport Magnetics Group, Inc. Transformers are awesome. Very reasonable pricing too.
They built me a one-off to replace the under specced transformer in my now defunct SoundTracs console. They even identified that the original was too small when I gave them the required taps and available current on each.
It was made on site in Waterbury CT (they recently moved from Bridgeport), and I had it in 3 days!
They also will do production runs in their factory in India, but as I only was after one unit I didn't find out much more about that.
Their lobby was littered with awards for all kinds of transformers that they make, including a bunch of interesting looking ones designed for audio.
My only relationship with them is as a one off, but super happy customer.

i'm surprised to not see Richard Sumner mentioned here. I know its been resolved some time ago, but may as well give him a free plug. I have dealt with him numbers of times now and the results are always superb!! sumR.com
he outsources output transformers afaik, but all the power trannies are wound onsite. pricing beats plitron and IMO they are on the same level.
for instance I just got a fully potted CAN, custom wound toroid with 230V primary, 1 x CT 2A @ +/-50v and 2 x CT 1A @ +/-25v and 1 x 500ma @ +/-12.5v secondaries, 18AWG solid core leadouts and came to ~125USD its a mother of a trannie for a dac, but supplies all of the voltages I need in the one unit (aside from a small PCB mount 2va unit I used for the logic level stuff and front panel LEDs; this I then mounted on the front panel) so simplified the layout nicely. comes with a nicely comprehensive load testing certificate for peace of mind. that was part of a larger order, so dont hold him to that pricing, but previously something like a fully potted 240v 30va unit in a can, with dual 25v secondaries @ 2A is ~50USD custom made
why so much iron for a dac?? well I have dual mono headamps in there too and I went for a HV version pass D1 style discrete mosfet IV for the sabre (ackodac)
I cant give him enough props, myself and a good friend always go in on shipping and stock up on everything we need well ahead to save a bit on shipping. pleasant and patient man to deal with and you deal with the man himself, which is nice.
