Sound of XOs

For sometime, I have been using the Tent and Euroquartz XOs with various very low noisr power supplies (5nV/sqrtHz to 50nV/sqrtHz).

These units improved sound quality but I was looking for fast, low phase noise units with symmetrical waveforms.

Found some Valpey-Fisher high spec units with 1 sigma phase noise specs of 1 ps. These really make a difference and improved considerably on previous XOs I have used.

Timing of music is better; better balance bewteen bass and treble; improved clarity and makes CD much more acceptable.

Anyone with similar experience?:smash:

Fred Mak,
Would be great if you could tell us the type number and where and how to get into the possession of these Valpey-Fisher XO's.
In my experience the symmetry of the waveform has very little influence on the sound.
Power supply does, and also the compatibility of the supply with the circuit used.
No need to hammer:smash: :clown:

You can buy these clocks directly from:

Dove Electronics
East Setauket, NY
631-689-7733

Mast Distributors
Ronkonkoma, NY
631-471-4422

But you may be required to purchase a large volume. I think these clocks are amazing.

I once got a quote from VF of $135 for 100 units.

Which are these? The top spec ones 20ppm; 2.5% symmetry; 1.5 nS rise time are £2.37 per 105; don't ask me why 105.

Not worth buying low spec stuff for diy purposes.

:xeye:

Those were 50ppm I believe. Stability is really meaningless in this application. I got my quote direct from Valpey Fisher.

I have been on Jocko for some time about measuring one of these. Are you reading this Jocko? 😉 He correctly points out that the 1ps spec is >1kHz. No one knows what the spectrum looks like to my knowledge.

I have a couple of these oscillators in Pgh, but I doubt anyone nearby has the proper equipment to measure them.

How do they sound to you? For a few dollars more, may as well get the best. I think symmetry should matter as the pulses define the trigger points. Mine have duty cycles within 1%! The best I have seen.

I was poking around, and the VF140 and VF150 stuck out as good performers from their specs.

fmak: Which particular XO did you use?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VF140, tightest spec.

Why not Carnegie Mellon -- or are they too busy building buggies.

What about LC Audio's or Audiocom's XOs? Are these any good?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I had good experienece with the LC Clock. Audiocom just charges too much and I am not convinced by their PS. None of these give measurements on PS boise or jitter, just hype about how good they are!

Thanks for the reply. I have the LC Clock too and im happy with it, but I have not tried other XOs so I dont have any idea to how it stacks up against the others.
