Sony KSS-190A adjustment

Is there anyone here with experience in correctly adjusting the Sony KSS-190A?

I have just received a Sony 333ESD which plays about half of my CD collection but skips on the rest and was wondering if having the tracking and focus adjusted might improves things.

You need to check all the basic mechanical aspects first making sure that the sled is free and that there is no old dried grease etc causing sticking.

A check with an oscilloscope is mandatory and will show the amplitude and quality of the recovered signal off the disc. Unless the player has been tampered with then there is no reason for the adjustments to be in error.

This covers adjustment and many other aspects of restoring a player... your will be similar in the theory, different in the method.

Thanks Mooly, I was hoping you might show up on this thread 😉

The 333ESD was in a very sorry state when it arrived with me (ex pawn shop via eBay). Believe it or not the main guide rod was actually seized up with rust and the whole thing was coated in nicotine stains! 😱

After a mechanical strip down and service the mechanism now all works smoothly and freely. I've cleaned the upper and lower lenses of the laser and whilst I haven't replaced any of the elctrolytics on the servo side (yet) I did pull a few for testing and they all measured within spec.

I've also retouched any solder joints which may have got hot or been subjected to mechanical stress and washed down the circuit boards with IPA to remove the filth.

The upshot is that it now plays about half of my factory CD's without skipping. The other half it will struggles with and CDR's are petty hopeless.

I don't own an oscilloscope so I suppose I looking for a friendly and experienced tech who'd be willing to check the focus and tracking adjustments for me and if necessary measure the laser power to ascertain whether or no the skipping is just down to a laser diode on its last legs.

It love to get this old beast back to rude health as it really does sound superb when it's working.

As an ex service tech I can well believe the state it was in. Nicotine almost certainly means that the internal optics (prism, the photo diode array) of the pickup are heavily contaminated. A scope check of RF amplitude would confirm that.

I don't suppose it's a job you'd be willing to take on?

I read somewhere (on here I think) about someone cleaning an entire pick-up in a bath of IPA in an ultrasonic cleaner. Apparently it worked a treat.

Not particularly tbh 🙂

The diode array and internal optics are in a critical alignment with each other and once that is broken by removing them then you would never satisfactorily realign them at home.

I've heard of ultrasonic baths being used but you would have to be prepared for it not just to fail but to render it 100% non functional if things didn't work out.

Fair enough. There are couple of other forum members (the likely suspects) who seem to be very familiar with the KSS-190A but they live in Canada and Germany. I've emailed a couple of techs in the UK but with no luck. I suppose it's just not an attractive job.

BTW I managed to find a source of the original Sharp laser diodes and have ordered a couple just in case I ever manage to find someone who's able to fit and align a new one.

Its something that would be fraught with potential problems and the risk of totally writing off the pickup. To replace a laser diode would need ways and means of looking at the relative beams reflected back from the disc to get the alignment correct, which just isn't feasible at home.

I hope you can get it sorted but its going to be an uphill struggle I suspect.

Hello Mike,

What is the diode type for KSS 190A?
Thanks,
Candristi
