I had a minor, well maybe not, incident recently. A person with a revoked driver's license, no insurance and a BAC way over the limit passed out and drifted into my lane on a two lane road. I was doing 40MPH (63KPH) and he was probably above that. That is a closure rate of 120 feet per second or 36.6M/s. I realized at about 60 feet that he was coming into my lane. That gave me probably 500ms to react. You don't have time to think. I spun the wheel to the right lock and hit the brakes hard. BOOM! I am in a lot of pain, but nothing is broken. The car (2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited) is a write off.
Witnesses identified the driver who left the scene smelled of alcohol and was staggering as he walked away. I found a previous on him for driving with a revoked license, no Ins, driving infraction from 2006 . Repeate offender.
The car did what it was supposed to, protect the passengers. It looked like someone lifted the hood, dropped a frag grenade in and dropped the hood.
I ordered a replacement today. It will arrive around the end of Nov. The cost after ins settlement for uninsured motorist is well worth the vehicle.

I hope you're getting yourself fully checked out after this. Unsure how the Med expenses get handled in such a case. Sure sorry to read this happened to you and your car!
EMS checked us out at the site. Long wait at the local hospital so I opted to go to First Assist next day. X-Ray showed no fractures, just a lot of soft tissue damage. Insurance companies can battle it out. I will set on the sideline. (I have Medicare in the USA), since the driver of the other car had no insurance, they can go after him but wont.
So far he has not been charged with anything. Such is the state of affairs in our local area.

I hope so, It is not a mater of being vindictive but they just need to get him off the street before he kills someone. He is a repeate offender. He will not change and society needs to be protected from him.
Glad you are okay! That looks pretty bad.
Don’t trust the insurance companies. They are there to make money off this incident. They will not do the right thing for you. We went through something similar and had to fight tooth and nail to get our car back despite it being the other party’s fault. First they said they would fix it, then kept our car in their garage for three months, then said it had to be totalled and then left it out in the rain on their lot with everything undone. True story.
It sucks to be in your position. Make them make you whole again. Best wishes!

Damn... At least you're OK-ish... Soft tissue damage takes time. I hope you don't end up with any permanent damage. Cars can be replaced.

Ouch. That's just terrible. Hope you're OK after all that.
It's amazing to me how people just don't care. Revoked license, drunk and asleep at the wheel, no insurance, and no remorse... I've had the misfortune of knowing people like that personally (in my "family") and it's hard for me not to hate them for being such aholes.

Thanks all.
Actually my insurance is great. They are paying me more than I originally paid for the car, and in fact almost the trade in value at the Subaru dealership. In addition they told me to send them any medical bills I get, and are sending me a check for "Pain and Suffering". Their representative called me to explain what benefits I would receive and the process.
I have already completed the online process for releasing the vehicle to them, sent the title and second dongle by pre paid UPS which should arrive by Monday, and should have an EFT transfer of the money some time next week.

When i first read this i said uh-oh, Gimp laid down his bike on the ‘tail of the dragon‘ (for those not in the know its a famous twisty stretch of road known for eating motorcycles as lunch!) But yah, ouch……glad your ok. 😎
Glad that you're fine. It could have been much worse.
They should lock up this guy and throw away the keys.
Otherwise, he'll kill someone in future.

I have ridden the Dragon, but don't any more. I ride the Snake Hwy 421.
Hwy 421, The Snake
And yes, I am glad I was in a car and not on the bike.

Years ago, when I was living in Roy, WA, we had a very sad - despicable actually - incident involving two cyclists and a driver fitting the profile of your offender exactly. Their last ride of the season it was said, husband and wife going to put the bikes into storage for the winter; one did not survive...And yes, I am glad I was in a car and not on the bike.
