Ok yes, I'm pretty sure it's bad.
I was being an idiot and decided to do some easy mods to my NS500V out of boredom tonight. Having not soldered in years, some molten solder actually fell and splattered onto the video board. Luckily I was able to clean most of it up just by using pliers, but some of it shorted 3 pins on one of the display processors (I'm not sure what to call them... the big chips).
It was the one right next to the "display" label, so I figured, "well, I don't use this for DVDs anyway so I'll just power it up and see if it still works." This was, probably, a very bad idea, but I was having an adventure so I did it anyway. I could have sworn I heard a pop come from somewhere, but I'm not certain. The player now only goes into Standby and when I try to soft power it up the LCD shows "Sony DVD" and then goes right back into standby.
Well, this may be a stupid question, but is this the end? Is the chip now dead?
I know it probably is and I can do nothing about it, I just need confirmation. At least this will motivate me to get a job to get a new source and the right tools for DIY audio.

I assume you've already removed the short and the behavior is the same?
You may well have shorted a power trace to ground. See if you can trace back from the short. You may have simply blown a fuse and/or an SMT component or two, or vaporized some traces.
Best case is probably that you took out a power regulator that is needed elsewhere, which is why the board won't come out of standby. Check all of these for proper output voltage.

you're crazy to do hat thing in the first place...but I guess ther eshould be a fix somewhere...if you're not so happy with it...send it back for them to take a look...I guess it was just a few parts blown off..cehck the caps for venting...and any burnt parts...i think the IC migh be friend...like the previous poster said...check for voltages...isolate the other parts of the player..u wouldn't want to do more harm...only power the parts that u really need to...

Well, no I haven't removed the short yet, I'm not sure how to go about removing solder from such a tiny crevice. I've yet to make a hot air pencil so I'll do that soon and try to use a braid I guess.
Unfortunately I know next to nothing about electronics, except fo the basic knowledge of how capacitors and resistors work (which was supposed to be all that I was going to touch) so I'm not quite sure what some of the parts you guys are referring to. I'll do some more research after I finish my busy monday tomorrow.

Alright, after a little bit of luck I got the solder out. However, the problem is still the same, so I'm going to guess that I killed something or other. The traces don't seem to go anywhere in particular, although I didn't look at the other side of the board because that would require a lot of removing of things. I probably will do it anyway since I have nothing to lose now.
Another question, there are some "ribbon" cables that are attached to the boards in a few places, is there anyway to remove these?
