Sold PA speaker dilemma.

Hello I was wondering if anyone could help out on this one? Myself and a former band member recently sold on a set of Mackie sa1232z active speakers as our old band is now defunct due to our singer/guitarists life being tragically cut short in a freak accident.

After the sale (which was a four figure sum), we didn't hesitate to put a third of the money into our late friends charity fund as we thought this was the moral thing to do. The people bought these speakers took them "as seen" as we assured them they were ok as the last time we used them at the wake they were in tip top condition sound wise . They had the option to test them out prior to buying, but took them without testing .

A few days later they got in touch saying a midrange or tweeter driver on one of the units is faulty. It craps out on certain notes around the threshold of the midrange and the tweeter. It isn't noticeable when say, an mp3 of music is playing, just on a clean guitar sound. I went through to see it in person, and they were right. It's fine everywhere apart from the middle portion of the guitar fretboard. They already own a set of the mackie sa1532 so I ruled out damage from usage with lack of knowledge.

The problem I have is, these speakers are now discontinued, I did say to them that if it genuinely is knackered, we'd chip in get the new driver etc. I've sourced the tweeter which is relatively inexpensive but the midrange driver is a different story. They're completely obsolete (rcf midrange mr160 1.7n). So I don't know what the hell to do if its the mids. I have sourced a similar aftermarket midrange by celestion and eminence, but it's only got the same physical dimensions, I have no clue what the power spec is on the ref's, there is no info on them with being discontinued units. so I dont know if the aftermarket mids I've sourced will be compatible in there? I'm no PA whizz kid, I was wondering if any of yous know if the celestions or the eminence would be compatible ?

Note : We still haven't ruled out a few daft things like grill rattle, loose speaker clamps, loose dust caps etc.

I've said to them before we waste any more fuel meeting each other. Make sure we can eliminate the above mentioned problems. I don't think i can be any more fair on this.

Feedback would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback , I already have that eBay listing on watch. I've also sourced a compatible P Audio aftermarket tweeter from Blue Aran for around £20. Are these any good

When you refer to "finger trouble" what do you mean by this? I've never heard that term before! Also, pink noise as in similar to white noise you hear on old analogue televisions?

OK, so the guy who I sold the speaker to has done all the required tests, it's not grill rattle or loose clamps etc. He switched the mids and the tweeters over one by one into the other unit and found it to be the midrange driver. Luckily it isn't the RCF mr160 1.7n that is in there. These are only in the 1232 model and the speakers I sold were, 1232z. The aftermarket replacement that fits the 1232z is the P-Audio SN6-100N. Ive noticed this isn't stocked in the UK, but it is available on eBay from the USA. I was wondering if an eminence alphalite 6 neo 8ohm would be compatible as these are readily available in the UK? The only thing different I can see with it from dimensions and power specs is different terminals?
