soft start needed?

hi, i'd like to build a PS for a gainclone ( 2 channels, 1 LM3886 each).
i will go the not regulated way. just a tranny, a diode bridge, and the usual caps between the 2 lines and ground.
tranny will be (28+28)VAC, so i guess output will be around +-40VDC.
i think i'll use something around 6600uF each rail.
using these caps, should i consider a soft start circuit?
are caps too small? if so, what capacity per rail do you recomend? should i consider soft start for these new caps?
thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,
you may need a soft start for your toroid transformer, particularly if it is over 300VA.

You are unlikely to see any benefit from slow start for the smoothing caps until you are above 100mF on each rail.

28Vac is going to be a bit too high for 8ohm speakers and massively too high for 4ohm speakers. Usually 20Vac for 4ohm and 25Vac for 8ohm are used.

I always recommend that one adopts a rectifier and dual capacitors for each amplifier channel.
You can still use one transformer to feed the two rectifiers.
