Hello all:
I have been a recording engineer for about 15 years and am a fairly accomplished woodworker. Currently I am designing my own recording studio and am looking for advice on building far field soffit mounted full range monitors with a fairly flat response. The purpose of far fields are more for the client WOW factor. Mixing is normally done on the near fields but when the client comes in we fire up the far fields for a "big" sound. I am looking for a design with a horn tweeter and dual 12" drivers. Due to the size limitation of the control room I am not using the standard 15". Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

You're going to have to be more specific about the cab's max dimensions and desired performance criteria such as its directivity (DI), dynamic headroom, etc. since a 15" loaded cab isn't necessarily going to be larger than dual 12" yet may have a DI better suited for the app.
Also, this thread needs to be moved to the LOUDSPEAKER forum.

Maybe I am over my head since I am not a acoustician. Ideally I would like to get the same response as a JBL 4430 only in a 12" version (If possible). I always liked the 4430's and I am familiar with their
sound. The size restriction that I mentioned was due to the throw distance. I have 15' to the back wall. Cabinet dimensions I can work around. There will be a couch in front of the wall for clients to sit and listen.
Here are the 4430 specs if it helps.

Anything else you would need to know I will try to find out.
Again thank you for the help.

You wait for GM to yell it loud enough that I hear. 🙂

Yeah, good studio monitor design isn't a trivial pursuit.
IMO the 4430 has too wide a dispersion for only a 15 ft throw unless the side walls are suitably damped (though they could be toe'd in a bit), so if dual 12" are used then ideally they need to be horizontally opposed to narrow up its horizontal pattern for best clarity which will require a lower XO point than the 4430's 1 kHz, or too low IIRC for the horn. Really, if ~cloning, a 4435 seems the better choice here, but for something this brand/model specific, your best bet is to query the JBL 'faithful': http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/

Thanks for the reply. I will check with the JBL crew.
Do you have any recommendations? Previous projects? Single 12"?, Single 15"? I would like to keep the hf horn. I respect the opinion of this forum.
Thanks again

Hey!! What a thread 🙂 For the thread starter: You can find the waveguide topic, Dr. Geddes might sell some ESP 12 front baffle and waveguide, thats a good starting point imho !
Im just planning to soffit mount these 4430's ( still need amplifier, gonna get hypex class-d with SMPS, been waitingforthis in the last 4 years, listening nothin but shitty soundsystem but it paid off so it seems !!! ) , but I ve collected all the drivers to do a 4435 as well, and now I have the factory 4430's I can do quite exact clone redo job as well I think
I have the place to soffit one pair of monitors, 4435 or 4430, but cant choose, one pair has to go either way , but the ones staying gonna get digital crossover and all the goodies 🙂
Im goin to post pictures. The room is in fact quite good, 17 x 16 feet (including soffit) all walls are 60 centimeter / 23 inch, composite material (cant name it , but its not brick ~70year old stuff) there is actually gypsum with 5cm of air behind it everywhere, lotsa aluminium ribs holding this all in place. Not my job, wasnt even there when this was done (fake walls) seems dodgy as well, maybe I can do something new yet ?
so if its OK I'd ask specific questions.

Take a look at the 4425 monitor it the smaller 12" version with a 2342 horn as opposed to the 2344. It doesn't have the same low end punch as it's bigger brother but it's a nice system.
