'Slotted' open baffle

For the past 15 years or so my main speakers have been variations on the classic Linkwitz-style narrow baffle actively EQed speaker exemplified by the Orion.

Alas, my new house no longer has a dedicated audio area and my wife, for some odd reason, thinks boxes look better than panels.

So I'm trying to work out how to build an OB that looks like a box, but performs like a panel.

One idea is to build a box with an open back, and slots at the sides and top.

The question is whether the slots will have a positive, neutral or negative effect.

The driver will be the Seas C18 coax.

Re the slots, depends on their number, location, size & aspect ratio viz-a-viz the panels & the internal cavity they help create, so no single answer to that unfortunately.

Providing you don't need high sensitivity, why not take another leaf out of Linkwitz's book and create a variation on the old Audio Artistry Vivaldi he designed? Looks like a box speaker but is a (relatively) narrow OB; entirely passive. Practical, and it's probably easier to achieve something along these lines now than when the Vivaldi was new as the measurement & XO design software tools are more widely available, and there is arguably a wider range of capable drivers to choose from. Right, with a box frame & cloth covering the front / sides / back of the ensemble so that in appearance, they looked more or less like a conventional loudspeaker. Good way of doing it. Off the top of my head, I can't recall if the LF end was an H or U frame but it worked well. To be honest, I'm surprised they've been largely forgotten; the performance was there, notwithstanding the modest efficiency.
