I bought one of these and had one of the 2 elements fail quite quickly. The only place I can find the elements is sold out.

Serves me right for buying a cheap gun, but perhaps someone here can give me some advice about where I might find spares, otherwise I might just have to ditch it and buy a Weller...

Thank you!

Cheap chinese knock-off of the Hakko 907 iron. The genuine stuff is really damn good, the knock-offs vary in quality from cheap garbage to pretty damn good. You can find replacement irons and elements for dirt cheap. Unfortunately, Weller is no longer the weller of old. Huge quality control issues now on certain models (especially the newer models but it is starting to leach into older designs too). Right now the big names are Hakko, Thermaltronics (former OKI/Metcal engineers), Ersa (more Europe focused), OKI/Metcal ($$$), JBC ($$$) and a few others. If you want cheap and low budget, then you are looking at Yihua, Aoyue and various other low end manufacturers. In the middle are companies which use chinese designs but have a bit higher quality, companies like Xytronics.

Hi perceptionchanges,
The Amazon site makes these look pretty grim. Your best resort might be an Ebay hunt.

There are some pretty good reliable stations as PedroDaGr8 has mentioned. Another inexpensive brand that might be pretty good is "Quick". I'll be reviewing some once they come in. A preliminary iron to test is promising, but real testing hasn't occurred yet.

Another real champ of a soldering station is made by "Solomon". The SL-30 model also has been made with a number of other names on it, but they are all made in the same factory. Mine is well over 15 years old and still going strong after a rebuild (changing capacitors and calibrating it). The tips last for a very long time, and are not expensive to buy. This station has a set temperature and actual temperature switchable LED display. Old school, but it's super reliable.
